Rudresh Mahanthappa

Rudresh Mahanthappa (born May 4, 1971 in Trieste , Italy ) is an American jazz saxophonist and composer.

Mahanthappa, a descendant of Indian immigrants, grew up in Boulder / Colorado and studied at Berklee College of Music until 1992 , before completing a master's degree in jazz composition at DePaul University in Chicago until 1998 . He has performed with musicians such as David Murray , Steve Coleman , Jack DeJohnette , Samir Chatterjee , Von Freeman , Tim Hagans , Fareed Haque , Howard Levy , David Liebman , Greg Osby , Kevin Ellington Mingus and Dr. Lonnie Smith up.

He works in several ensembles: the Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet (with Vijay Iyer , François Moutin and Elliot Humberto Kavee ), the Raw Materials (with Vijay Iyer), the Dual Identity (with Steve Lehman ), the Dakshina Ensemble (an indo-jazz Septet with Kadri Gopalnath ) and MSG (with Ronan Guilfoyle and Chander Sardjoe ). In 2008 he toured Europe with the French trio Dupont T and in 2012 with Nguyên Lê , Rich Brown and Gene Lake .

His first album Yatra was released in 1996 with Ryan Shultz , Jim Trompeter , Larry Kohut and Jerry Steinhilber , followed by Black Water in 2002 and Mother Tongue with the Rudresh Mahantappa Quartet in 2004 .

Prizes and awards

The album Kinsmen (2008), recorded together with Kadri Gopalnath, received the quarterly prize in the jazz category in 2009 from the jury of the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik . In 2009, 2010 and 2011 he received the Jazz Journalists Association Award for best alto saxophonist . In 2011 his album Apex (with Bunky Green) was included in the quarterly list of the best of the German Record Critics ' Prize. In 2011 and 2012 he also won the Down Beat critics poll . In 2015, his album Bird Calls (ACT) was jazz album of the year in the Down Beat Critic Polls, winning the alto saxophone and the Rising Star category as a composer.
