Michele Rosewoman
Donna Michele Rosewoman (born March 19, 1953 in Oakland, California ) is an American jazz pianist and composer.
Rosewoman began playing the piano at the age of 6 and studied with pianist Ed Kelly as a teenager . After working as a musician on the West Coast and leading her own groups, she moved to New York City in 1978 . There she soon worked with musicians of avant-garde jazz such as Oliver Lake , Billy Bang , Rufus Reid and with M-Base activists such as Greg Osby .
Rosewoman became internationally known in the early 1980s, made his first own records and performed at important European festivals. She has been active with her quintet Quintessence for twenty years; Osby, Steve Coleman and Gary Thomas have played there in the past . With her big band New Yor-Uba (including Román Díaz , Mauricio Herrera , Román Filiú and Tyshawn Sorey ) she performs music that is influenced by the Yoruba Orisha cult and Latin American music. She also plays in Robin Eubank's Trio EB 3 .
