Tyshawn Sorey (born July 8, 1980 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , piano , composition ) and music teacher.

biography

Sorey grew up in Newark and studied at William Paterson University and Wesleyan University , among others. with Anthony Braxton and Jay Hoggard . He has been active in the New York jazz scene since the early 2000s and works as a music teacher at the School for Improvisational Music and at the New School . In addition to his own projects, Sorey played with Steve Lehman ( Demian as Posthuman , 2005), in the Trio Fieldwork with Steve Lehman and Vijay Iyer , in Dave Douglas ' Nomad Ensemble and in the Steve Coleman band Five Elements , and also in the trio Pete Robbins and Mario Pavone , in the Interstellar Duo # 2 with the flautist Ras Moshe as well as with Angelika Niescier and with Johannes Lauer . In 2007 he released his debut album, the double CD That / Not . As a studied classical trombonist, he also gives solo concerts on the piano and works as a composer for various ensembles. He has also performed with Wadada Leo Smith , Misha Mengelberg , Anthony Braxton, Pascal Niggenkemper , Alexandra Grimal , Timuçin Şahin and Vijay Iyer.

In 2015 he won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the Rising Star category. In 2017, Sorey was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship ; 2018 United States Artists Fellowship .
