Johannes Lauer (born August 10, 1982 in Tübingen ) is a German jazz trombonist and composer .

Live and act

Lauer attended the Spohn high school in Ravensburg . He received piano and later trombone lessons, among others from Jiggs Whigham . After successfully participating in the youth competitions Jugend musiziert and Jugend jazzt , he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra from 1998 to 2002 . From 2002 to 2004 he studied jazz trombone at the University of the Arts in Adrian Mears , then with an Erasmus grant to Lucerne to go where he in 2006 with diplomas as a performer and composer, both with honors, graduated. During this time he was already traveling with his own groups. In 2007 he went to New York City for a master's degree , where he also took part in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop with Jim McNeely and Michael Abene . In addition to his own groups such as the duo Lauer / Sorey, Lauer / Malaby / Gress / Sorey formed with Tyshawn Sorey , the Trio Morf (with Oliver Potratz and Christian Weidner ) and the big band Lauer Large , he was also part of the quintet of Henning Sieverts , the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra and the bands of Harald Rüschenbaum , Pascal Niggenkemper , Olivia Trummer , Nils Wogram and Wanja Slavin . He can also be heard on albums by the SWR big band and by Niels Klein ( Loom ) and Joscha Oetz ( Perfektomat ).

At the invitation of the Goethe Institute , Lauer took part in the first EurOpen Meeting in the Copenhagen Jazzhouse; He also played in Mali, South America, Southeast Asia and at festivals such as the German Jazz Festival and the JazzFest Berlin .

His composition Scenes premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2008 . He also wrote the music for the play Trabi on tours of the Chawwerusch Theater and for the short film Wolkenbruch (2005) by Simon Eltz. He continued to work on Christoph Schlingensief's production Via Intolleranza II (music and conductor: Arno Waschk).

Prizes and awards

In the Jugend musiziert competition , Lauer was awarded federal prizes for piano four hands, brass quartet and trombone solo (2000); He also received first prize at the Bavarian state competition Jugend jazzt and then the newcomer prize of the Süddeutsche Zeitung with the band Fast-Break Quintett . In 2003 he won the internationally renowned Frank Rosolino Competition and in 2005 the Coup de Cœur at the 1st Concours de Jeunes Solistes de Jazz in Friborg .
