Steffen Schorn
Steffen Schorn (born September 26, 1967 in Aalen ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone and other woodwind instruments , composition ). He is considered "one of the outstanding musicians and composers of German jazz and the contemporary music scene" and heads the jazz department of the Nuremberg University of Music.
Live and act
Schorn had been taking trumpet lessons since 1973 , began composing two years later and switched to the saxophone in 1981, which he learned as an autodidact . Since 1986 he has been a member of the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Jazz Orchestra (until 1990), the Federal Youth Orchestra of Classical Music (1986–88) and the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra (1987–91). From 1988 to 1992 he studied jazz saxophone at the Cologne University of Music . Between 1990 and 1996 he was also in Rotterdam in professional bass clarinet with a focus on contemporary music enrolled.
Together with Klaus Graf , Schorn founded the Timeless Art Orchestra in 1990 . At around the same time he began working in the long-term, still open to development duo with Claudio Puntin , with whom he also played at Hermeto Pascoal in 1992 (he also performed in Europe with Pascoal's group in 2005). Since 1994 he has also been a member of the Cologne Saxophone Mafia . Since 1996 he has directed the Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion ; since 1997 he was the baritone saxophonist of the NDR big band .
In addition to his main instrument, the baritone saxophone , Schorn also uses numerous others, e.g. Woodwind instruments that are rarely used, such as the piccolo and bass flute, bass saxophone , contralto-clarinet, contrabass clarinet and tubax are used . Some of his compositions go beyond the jazz genre, such as “Ella” for string ensemble, jazz band and baritone saxophone (1991) or “Tiefenträume” for two solo woodwinds and big band (1994).
Schorn played in the George Gruntz Concert Band , with Joachim Kühn , Don Cherry , Sheila Jordan , Michael Brecker , Ray Anderson , Shirley Bassey , Uri Caine , Aki Takase , Gary Burton , Dianne Reeves , Al Jarreau , Natalie Cole , Nils Landgren , Dino Saluzzi , Klaus König , Lars Møller , Lucas Niggli and Nils Wogram . In 2006 he was involved in the world premiere of Infra for deep tones by Johannes Fritsch .
Since 2001 he has been a professor in the jazz department of the Nuremberg University of Music . There he leads the jazz composition class, teaches saxophone and ensemble playing and is artistically responsible for jazz lessons.
Honourings and prices
Partly together with Puntin he took part in the European Jazz Competition (1991), won the Golden Amadeus (1993) and was Southern Comfort ’s Jazzmusician of the Year . In 1994 he received the sponsorship award from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1999 he received the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize with the Saxophone Mafia . In 2009 he was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize in the “Composition” category.
For the studio production Tauspiegelungen , a movement from Schorn's Deep Dreams Suite , the BR sound engineers involved received the Golden Bobby award at the 2010 International Tonmeistertagung in Leipzig .
