Roger Hanschel (born July 25, 1964 in Wolfsburg ) is a German saxophonist and composer who works primarily in the field of creative jazz .

Career

Hanschel studied saxophone at the Cologne University of Music from 1981 to 1987 . There he founded the group Nana in 1983 with Hans Lüdemann (piano), Rainer Linke (bass) and Klaus Mages (drums) , in which he played until 1988. The Nana Orchestra was added later. Since then, composing has been a focus of his work alongside the saxophone . His compositions have now appeared on 30 CDs, among others. In 1986 he studied for three months at the school for fine arts in Banff / Canada with Dave Liebman , Dave Holland , Richie Beirach a . a.

Since 1987 Hanschel was a member of the Cologne Saxophone Mafia . With her he toured many parts of the world and played at almost all renowned festivals . With the Cologne Saxophone Mafia , Hanschel received four German Record Awards and the 1999 SWR Jazz Award .

He also continued working with Hans Lüdemann and Rainer Linke until 1993: Nana became Blau Frontal . This group released two CDs from 1989 to 1993, one as a trio and one in collaboration with Mark Feldman and Hank Roberts . In 1994 he founded a duo with the singer Gabriele Hasler and in 1995 set texts by Gertrude Stein to music with her. Since then the Duo Hasler Hanschel has released further CDs: With their program “Lovesongs” based on works by John Dowland they won the ensemble competition “Jazzarts” in 2003. They recorded the CD Frogs and Tea Bags together with the 2006 Büchner Prize winner, Oskar Pastior . Other albums such as Canta Rhei (2007) and Styr (with Dietmar Bonnen ) followed.

From 1994 to 1998 he also worked a lot in a duo with the Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger . In 1998 he became a member of the Steffen Schorn Septet . He also belonged to the Klaus König Orchestra .

In January 1998 he realized his music for saxophone and string quartet with the title Years of the Fifth Period . For this project he won musicians from Ensemble Modern , the Frankfurt Contemporary Quartet . In September 2001, he also performed Years of the Fifth Period with the Auryn Quartet on a 3-week tour of South America on behalf of the Goethe Institute . In 2014 he recorded his composition Precipitation with the Auryn Quartet .

In 2000 he founded the trio Triosphere together with Steffen Schorn and Dirk Mündelein , which presented the debut CD in spring 2004. The CD received the 2004 German Record Critics' Prize. The trio also won the 2003 ensemble competition "Jazzarts".

He also worked in a trio with Stefan Heidtmann ( keyboards ) and Klaus Kugel (drums, percussion ). Ornaments of Light and Sound is a special concept in which new music and film projection ( Ruth Hommelsheim - film, light art) correspond with each other. In 2006 he founded a new quartet called Roger Hanschels Heavy Rotation with Markus Segschneider ( guitar ), Dietmar Fuhr ( bass ) and Daniel Schröteler (percussion). The band was rejuvenated in 2013 with Bodek Janke (instead of Schröteler).

With Deobrat Mishra ( sitar ) and Prashant Mishra ( tabla ) he formed the Trio Benares , whose debut CD Assi Ghat received the quarterly award of the German Record Critics in 2016 . Hanschel was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize 2018 in the improvisation category .
