Life

Roberts began playing the cello at the age of ten . He also learned autodidactically the trombone , guitar and piano , as he later wanted to become a jazz musician . He played in various orchestras , jazz bands, rock and soul groups .

With the intention of becoming an improvising cellist and composer , Roberts attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston at the age of 19 , where he took lessons from Gary Burton . For some time he only dealt with modern jazz and began to sing in addition to his cello playing.

After completing his studies, Roberts moved to New York in the 1980s , where he quickly made contact with the avant-garde scene. Together with Mark Dresser ( double bass ) and Mark Feldman ( violin ) he founded the Arcado String Trio . He played in groups with Bill Frisell and Tim Berne . In 1987 his first solo album appeared on the JMT label ( Black Pastels ); from 1997 he published his productions on his own label Level Green Records . From the end of the 90s he was increasingly involved in projects outside of the classical jazz area, e.g. B. with the "Progressive Folk" group Ti Ti Chickapea or the "The Truth and Reconciliation Show". In 2016 he worked on Harris Eisenstadt 's Recent Developments album .

Roberts was twice named best cello player in the Down Beat Critics' Poll. In 2008 his album "Green" was on the best list of the German Record Critics' Award.
