action

John is a British journalist who has been working in Hong Kong for over ten years . He has relationships with two Chinese women - including the nightclub owner Vivian - who are both cheating on him. John is friends with the photo reporter Jim, whom he often meets.

John learns he has leukemia and is about to die. He then made a series of documentary recordings about the opinion of the locals about the transfer of the crown colony to China in 1997 .

One of the women comes to John and says she wants to leave Hong Kong. He accuses her of hurting his feelings and evicts her from his apartment.

After the surrender of Hong Kong, John dies sitting by the water, pointing a video camera at himself.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on Reel Views that the film would probably not be the last film to address the Hong Kong handover. However, it is doubtful whether another film would gather so many "first-class talent" in front of and behind the camera. Nevertheless, the film is inconsistent and disappointing.

The Lexicon of International Films wrote: “Feelings are veiled or suppressed, in Hong Kong only business counts that continues to run at the expense of freedom. The director, who is himself an American of Chinese origin, depicts the Hong Kong of the present. The improvisational style of the camera and the representation illustrate the state of disorientation; In addition to drastic metaphorical scenes, there are scenes full of tenderness, which can only remain fleeting. "
