Southern Comfort
Southern Comfort is an American whiskey liqueur with flavors or with the use of bourbon whiskey , peach , orange , vanilla , cinnamon and dark chocolate. It was produced by the spirits group Brown-Forman until 2015 and distributed in Germany through its German subsidiary. In early 2016, the Southern Comfort brand was sold to Sazerac .
history
The Irish bartender Martin Wilkes Heron mixed a cocktail in New Orleans in 1874 , which he called Cuffs and Buttons , as a counterpart to the then popular White Tie and Tails . In 1885 he renamed the cocktail, reminiscent of the " Deep South " of the United States, Southern Comfort ; from 1889 he bottled his liqueur of the same name, which he patented in 1898 , in Memphis , Tennessee . At the Louisiana Purchase Exposition , St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, the drink won a gold medal . Heron died a few months after the beginning of the prohibition period , during which production was suspended. In 1933, Francis Fowler's family took over the Southern Comfort recipe . After further changes of ownership, the liqueur was produced from 1983 to 2015 by the Brown Forman Corporation , for which it was an important pillar together with Jack Daniel’s . Southern Comfort has been officially available in Germany since 1979 and was sold through the subsidiary Brown-Forman Deutschland GmbH . Southern Comfort became known through Janis Joplin as an advertising icon . At the beginning of 2016, Brown-Forman sold the Southern Comfort brand together with the Tuaca brand to Sazerac.
composition
Southern Comfort was originally a whiskey- based cocktail , but today the liqueur is made from neutral alcohol with additives such as sugars and coloring agents as well as extracts of whiskey, peaches, oranges and aromatic herbs or spices such as cinnamon. Whiskey instead of neutral alcohol is used in the 40 percent Southern Comfort Reserve , a blend of Southern Comfort and six-year-old bourbon . Southern Comfort currently has 35 percent alcohol by volume in Germany , but it is also available in other drinking strengths such as 21%, 38% and 50%. Since mid-2017, the drink has been produced with the addition of an aromatic amount of real whiskey of unspecified origin.
Further products
In 2010 another Southern Comfort brand liqueur was launched on the German market . Southern Comfort Lime tastes like lime and has an alcohol content of 27.5% vol.
