Oliver Potratz (born May 29, 1973 in Hamburg ) is a German modern jazz bassist and interpreter of contemporary music .

Live and act

Potratz received violin lessons from the age of ten; at the age of 15 he also started playing the electric bass . In 1994 the double bass was added. From 1995 to 1999 he studied classical double bass at the Berlin University of the Arts and then jazz with Sigi Busch , David Friedman and Jerry Granelli . In 2013 he completed his master's degree in jazz composition at the Berlin Jazz Institute , with John Hollenbeck and Greg Cohen with the distinction " summa cum laude ". He is a member of several ensembles with which he made recordings on CD and for radio and toured most of the European countries, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Israel, South and East Africa, the Near and Middle East, Central Asia, Central America, South America who undertook the Philippines and Australia. As a soloist he played contemporary works with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Anhaltische Philharmonie and the Bergische Symphoniker.

He was a member of the Carsten Daerr Trio (with Eric Schaefer ), the Klima Kalima Trio (with Kalle Kalima and Oliver Steidle ) and the Berlin Calling group (with Daniel Erdmann , Carsten Daerr, Ritsche Koch , Ronny Graupe and Sebastian Merk ). He is also a member of the contemporary music ensemble Work in Progress . Other musical partners were Maurice de Martin , Mircea Tiberian , Tomasz Stańko , Bobby McFerrin , Gitte Hænning , Rolando Villazon, Antonis Anissegos , Christian Lillinger , David Friedman , Rolf Kühn , Philipp Gropper , Jiggs Whigham , Christopher Dell and John Schröder .

In 2008 he received the New German Jazz Prize with the band Klima Kalima .
