Christian Lillinger (born April 21, 1984 in Lübben ) is a German drummer , composer and percussionist of the modern creative style and new improvisation music .

Live and act

Christian Lillinger is the older brother of the composer, pianist and conductor Robert Lillinger and grew up in the village of Kuschkow . Lillinger studied from 2000 to 2004 at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden with Günter Sommer . Between 2001 and 2003 he was a member of the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra .

Lillinger plays in the trio Gropper | Graupe | Lillinger , known until 2015 under the name Hyperactive Kid , with saxophonist Philipp Gropper and guitarist Ronny Graupe , where he largely confines himself to the conventional drum set. In 2008 he put together his first own band, Christian Lillingers Grund , whose first two albums were released in late 2009 and 2013 on Clean Feed Records . Lillinger also works as a sideman with well-known musicians such as Rolf Kühn , Miroslav Vitouš , Beat Furrer , Rudi Mahall , John Schröder , Barre Phillips , Wadada Leo Smith , Frank Gratkowski , Simon Nabatov , Tobias Delius , Axel Dörner , Thomas Lehn , Michael Wollny , Louis Sclavis , Bruno Chevillon , David Liebman , Gebhard Ullmann , Médéric Collignon , Alexander von Schlippenbach , Urs Leimgruber , Theo Jörgensmann , Zeitkratzer , John Edwards , Greg Cohen , William Parker , Joe Lovano , Tony Malaby . Since 2004 he has also been working in the EUPHORIUM_freakestra , the project ensemble around Oliver Schwerdt , with whom he has emerged in particular in the trio and quintet with Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky . The joint recording of Petrowsky's “late work” with the albums Tumult! , Riot! , Rabatz! received a lot of attention. Since 2009 Lillinger has also been working in the Grünen Piano Trio with Achim Kaufmann and Robert Landfermann , which has so far produced two albums and, among other things, played in the 2015 Albert Mangelsdorff Prize awarded to Kaufmann at the Berlin Jazz Festival . Since 2010 Lillinger has also been working in the trio Dell Lillinger Westergaard , which also performed with John Tchicai .

In 2011 he founded the trio Starlight with Petter Eldh and Wanja Slavin , which released its debut CD in 2013 on the Swiss label Unit Records . With Eldh and Slavin he also founded the quartet Amok Amor with the American trumpeter Peter Evans , which released his first album of the same name in 2015. He also plays in a trio with Eldh and the pianist Kaja Draksler and in the qÖÖlp quartet with Ronny Graupe, Valentin and Théo Ceccaldi .

Lillinger is also a member of the following groups: Rolf Kühn Unit, Henrik Walsdorff Trio, Die Enricherung , Pascal Niggenkemper Vision 7, Ronny Graupes Spoom , Schmittquote Meier, Marc Schmolling Trio, Wanja Slavin Quintett, Carl Ludwig Hübschs Drift, Hübsch Acht, Uwe Steinmetz Stream Ensemble, The Upper Class , Ember , Gerhard Gschlößl's group of four, Gerhard Gschlößl's G9, KUU! and also plays with Joachim Kühn in a trio.

From 2012 to 2013 Lillinger was a member of the board of the Union of German Jazz Musicians . At the end of 2017 he founded the label PLAIST-Music, which is dedicated to contemporary avant-garde music that spans genres.

Prizes and awards

Lillinger is the winner of the "Leipzig Improvisation Competition" in 2001. From August 2016 to March 2017 he is a scholarship holder of the Bartels Foundation in Basel. Lillinger is the winner of the SWR Jazz Prize 2017. The album Open Form for Society was awarded in the 3rd quarter of 2019 and placed on the list of the best of the German Record Critics' Prize : “Christian Lillinger is pushing jazz beyond its supposed limits like no other in this country at the moment ".
