Eric Schaefer (born August 14, 1976 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German jazz drummer.

Live and act

Schaefer has been playing the drums since 1988. He learned the first basics at the Vechta district music school with Thomas Aldenhoff. He was a member of the Federal Youth Orchestra, took part in tours through Germany, Hungary and Israel and was a member of the straight-edge hardcore band Soulmate . From 1995 he studied classical percussion and new music with Christoph Caskel in Cologne. In Berlin he studied from 1997 jazz with Jerry Granelli and David Friedman and composition with Maria Schneider and James Knapp .

Since 1998 he has toured numerous European countries, South Africa, Korea and the USA and participated in jazz festivals a. a. in Montreal, Copenhagen, Porto, Lausanne, Bergen, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. He is active in several bands. With Daniel Erdmann , Michael Thieke , Michael Andreson and Johannes Fink he formed the group Erik Schaefer + Demontage , for which he is also active as a composer. Eric Schaefer and Henosis consisted of the jazz musicians Michael Thieke, Uwe Steinmetz, Carsten Daerr and Oliver Potratz and the Athena string quartet (with Saskia Viersen , Margherita Biederbick , Hannah Klein and Kathrin Bogensberger ). As a soloist, Schaefer appears as Eric Schaefer aka the Phlegma Phighter SOLO .

Schaefer was also a member of the trios of Joachim Kühn ( Love & Peace ), Arne Jansen (with Michael Wollny ) and Carsten Daerr (with Oliver Potratz), of Michael Thieke's group Ununumium (with Luca Venitucci and Derek Shirley ) and the groups Johnny La Marama (with Chris Dahlgren and Kalle Kalima ) and Nickendes Perlgras (with Michael Anderson and Michael Thieke). With Michael Wollny and Eva Kruse he formed the trio [em] from 2002 to 2013 ; he also belongs to the resulting Michael Wollny Trio (with bassist Tim Lefebvre and Christian Weber ). In addition to CDs, he made numerous radio recordings.

Schaefer has been a senior lecturer in jazz drums at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden since 2008 . He lives in Berlin.

Prizes and awards

Schaefer was awarded the Karl Hofer Prize of the Berlin University of the Arts in 2005. In 2010 he received the SWR Jazz Prize , which was founded on its versatility from rock jazz to experimental forms.

In 2011 the group [em] received the New German Jazz Prize . In 2011, the trio was [em] with the ECHO Jazz as National Ensemble of the Year Award.
