The purple breast pigeon ( Claravis mondetoura ) is a species of the pigeon birds and belongs to the subfamily of the American small pigeons . Unlike Geoffroy's pigeon , which belongs to the same genus, the purple-breasted pigeon is not considered threatened in terms of its population, although the seeds of the bamboo genus Guadua play a major role, similar to Geoffroy's pigeons .

Appearance

The purple breast pigeon reaches a body length of up to 23 centimeters. In size and shape is very similar to the Purpurbrusttäubchen belonging to the same genus Blue Ground Dove . Similar to this species, there is a noticeable gender dimorphism. The males have an overall blue-gray plumage, while the females are cinnamon brown.

The male's forehead, face and chest are whitish blue-gray. The plumage turns into a white-gray on the under tail-coverts. The top of the body is a little darker. The three rows of metallic dark spots on the wings are striking. The beak is dark gray. The feet are reddish. The female is cinnamon brown on the top of the body. The rows of spots on the wings are darker than those of the blue dove females. The underside of the body is a little lighter.

Spread and behavior

The distribution area of ​​the purple breast pigeon extends from southern Mexico across Central America and the Andes to Bolivia. The habitat of this pigeon species are humid mountain forests with dense undergrowth and especially dense bamboo thickets. It inhabits altitudes between 1,300 and 3,300 meters above sea level. There are six subspecies.

The purple breast pigeon is adapted in its reproductive behavior and its migration to the flowering and seed cycles of Chusquea and the bamboo genus Gudua . Nothing is known about the reproductive biology of this species.
