Sebastian Merk
Sebastian Merk (* 1977 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German modern jazz drummer .
Live and act
Merk was a member of the State Youth Jazz Orchestra of Hesse from 1999 to 2002. He first studied at the "Franz Liszt" Music Academy in Weimar with Keith Copeland and Jo Thönes and used the jazz scholarship received from the City of Frankfurt am Main in 2000 to go to New York City . From 2001 he continued his education at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . After moving to Berlin, he worked with musicians such as Kalle Kalima , Carsten Daerr , Pepe Berns Silke Eberhard , Daniel Erdmann , John Schröder and also with Martin Lejeune . Since 2006 he has been composing for his own band Merkur , which stylistically moves between contemporary jazz, psychedelic rock and minimal music .
Merk is now represented on over 20 published CD productions; He played at numerous international festivals ( German Jazz Festival , JazzFest Berlin , JazzBaltica , Gexto Jazz Festival in Spain, New German Jazz Prize ) and toured Europe, East Asia and North America. He has also performed with musicians such as Lee Konitz , Till Brönner , Ack van Rooyen , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Eddie Henderson , Mark Murphy and Ernie Watts . Currently (2012) he is working with the groups of Sebastian Studnitzky , Johannes Enders , Walter Lang , Mark Wyand, Gee Hye Lee , Frank Spaniol and with Spaniol4 , Poetry Clan , Thärichens Tentett , the Lisbeth Quartet and Wollny / Fink / Merk.
Since October 2011 he has been a professor at the "Carl Maria von Weber" University of Music in Dresden .
