Frank Spaniol (* 1971 in Neunkirchen , Saarland ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone , flute , bass clarinet ).

Live and act

Spaniol grew up in Saarland and started playing the saxophone at the age of 17; an early musical role model was Sonny Rollins . After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering for three years , and from 1994 jazz at the Mainz University of Music . He has lived in Berlin since 2003 and has played a. a. in the quartet of guitarist Benedikt Reidenbach and works with his own band projects such as Spaniol4 , for which he composes and arranges. In 2004 the quartet album Acoustic Jazz (Rodenstein Records, with Markus Bodenseh , Ulf Kleiner , Sebastian Merk ) was released, which was produced in cooperation with the Saarländischer Rundfunk . Three more albums followed by 2013 with the same line-up, most recently The Trip . Other band projects in the field of jazz are Polyphonix (with Thomas Siffling ) and the Diethelm Duo (with Ulf Kleiner); he also works with the formation DePhazz ( Daily Lama , 2002), with Ernie Hammes and Johannes Bartmes ( Me We , Fante-Records). In his home region, he also played with Ro Gebhardt and Euro Pool Orchestra by Christoph Mudrich .

Prizes and awards

In 2008 Spaniol4 took second place in the final of the New German Jazz Prize .
