Pepe Berns

Pepe Berns (* 1966 ) is a German bassist of the Modern Jazz .

Live and act

Berns studied jazz double bass at the Cologne University of Music . During his studies he made recordings under Joachim Ullrich (with Reiner Winterschladen , Henning Berg , Hendrik Soll , Matthias Schubert and Christoph Adams ) and performed in a trio with Christoph Adams and Steve Argüelles .

From 1992 to 1994 he studied at the California Institute of Fine Arts with Charlie Haden and at the Manhattan School of Music with Harvie Swartz and Maria Schneider . He was a member of Eliot Zigmund's quartet in New York and performed a. a. with Ben Monder , Vic Juris , Jeff Williams , Chris Potter , Mike Lee , Tom Rainey and Joel Frahm .

Until 2003 he studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin with James Knapp , David Friedman and Maria Schneider. Since 2000 he has been a member of the Jonas Schoen Quartet. Since 2003 he has led his own band with the guitarists Eric St. Laurent and Kai Brückner , the saxophonist Frank Delle and the drummer Heinz Lichius , with whom he recorded the album Closely Handled in 2004 . Since 2006 he has been playing in a quartet with accordionists Tino Derado , Kai Brückner and Heinz Lichius, but also in the Trio Tambour with David Friedman and Peter Less . He also plays in the quartet of Gabriel Coburger (Weirdo).

Berns teaches at the Musikschule Kreuzberg and since 2004 at the University of the Arts in Berlin and at the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig as a professor for jazz bass.
