Kristjan Randalu (born August 27, 1978 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian pianist and composer of world jazz .

Live and act

Randalu comes from a musical family: like his father, the classical pianist Kalle Randalu and his mother, he also became a pianist. His sister, Liisa Randalu , is a violist. In his childhood he moved to Karlsruhe with his parents . He graduated from the Musikhochschule Stuttgart with Paul Schwarz and moved to London in 2001, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Django Bates ; then he continued his education at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

His first projects with the Estonian singer Siiri Sisask ( Jälg 2002) and solo concerts followed the founding of his quartet, with which he presented his first album in 2004. Since 2011 he has been playing with the Tunisian singer and oud player Dhafer Youssef ; also in a duo with Bodek Janke , with whom he is currently also working in a trio with Petros Klampanis . He also appeared in the TransAtlantic Collective by Patrick Cornelius / Michael Janisch .

Prizes and awards

Randalu was awarded the Biberach Jazz Prize in 1997 and in 2002 was the winner of the Solo Piano Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival . In 2007 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize. In 2011 he received the Elion Jazz Prize in Estonia.
