Biberach Jazz Prize
The Biberach Jazz Prize for young jazz musicians is a music prize that has been awarded every two years since 1990.
history
It was launched in 1990 by the jazz club and the city of Biberach "to promote the idea of jazz as a contemporary art form". It is one of the few internationally advertised prizes for young jazz musicians and after 20 years has become a permanent fixture. The Biberach competition has become increasingly popular in recent years and the field of participants has become increasingly international. Since 2010, the Biberach Jazz Prize has received significant support from the state of Baden-Württemberg.
conditions
Based on the conditions of Jugend jazz and Jugend musiziert , the maximum age of the participants is 25 years, for ensembles the average age counts. Participation in the Biberach Jazz Prize is also open to (jazz) students at music schools and colleges as well as to musicians who are already commercially active. There are no stylistic or casting restrictions.
jury
Renowned jazz musicians and music educators as well as experts from the media industry make up the jury. Currently (2016) the chairman is Dieter Ilg ; the musicians Jürgen Seefelder and Frank Sikora as well as the journalist Oliver Hochkeppel also belong to the jury. She makes the pre-selection for the final from all applicants, in which the ranking of the three best applicants in the live act is finally determined. The duration of the contributions is limited to 30 minutes.
Prize money
The first three prizes are shown as cash prizes, with the 1st prize being EUR 2,000, the 2nd prize EUR 1,000 and the 3rd prize being EUR 500. A composition prize has also been awarded since 2014; In 2016 an audience award was also awarded for the first time.
