Laia Genc (pronounced: Gentsch; * 1978 in Berlin ) is a German modern jazz pianist .

Live and act

The daughter of a German mother and a father of Turkish origin grew up in Berlin. She studied jazz piano at the Cologne University of Music , first with Hubert Nuss , then with John Taylor . During her studies she was a member of the BuJazzO between 2001 and 2003 , but also of the NRW youth jazz orchestra . She played with the Nurse Or Nuc jazz quartet and the Terrence Ngassa Sextet before starting her own band. She also works with Annette Maye in the PyromanDuo , which is dedicated to a synthesis of modern jazz, Balkan music and new improvisation music, but has also performed in a trio with Ulla Oster and Angelika Niescier , with Simin Tander and with the United Women's Orchestra . Since 2003 she has also played in Georg Ruby's Blue Art Orchestra and in the Miss Jones Big Band , which resumes the tradition of the women's big bands of the swing era; she is also one of the co-founders of the world music jazz trio Kalima . In addition, she performs compositions by Mikis Theodorakis with Ta Lyrika . With a grant from the NRW Kulturstiftung, Genc spent a few months in Istanbul in 2014 to advance her project Istanbul Composers Orchestra . In November 2014 and again in February 2017 she will be a guest at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut in Yangon , Myanmar . As a pianist, she is also a permanent member of Caroline Thon's big band Thoneline Orchestra , with whom she was part of Enja / Yellowbird's album "Black & White Swan" in October 2015.

Genc has performed at various festivals such as the Jazzrally Düsseldorf and the Jazz Festival Viersen , but has also toured South Korea and Morocco. Their trio was awarded the Biberach Jazz Prize in 2004. In 2006 she and Annette Maye won first place in the jazz category of the Torneo Internationale Della Musica competition in Italy .

The recording of her solo concert in the Stadtwaage Bremen on November 14, 2016 was broadcast on January 29, 2017 on Nordwestradio .
