Hubert Nut

Hubert Nuss (* 10. March 1964 in Neckarsulm ) is a German jazz - pianist and composer .

Live and act

Nuss began classical piano training at the age of eight, at 16 he also received lessons in church organ and classical improvisation and at the same time made his first experiences in jazz. From 1982 to 1986 he was a pianist in the Baden-Württemberg Youth Jazz Orchestra and from 1988 to 1989 in the Federal Jazz Orchestra . He can be heard on their “BuJazzO Vol. 1” CD (1988).

He studied jazz piano at the Cologne University of Music and graduated with distinction in 1992. From 1993 to 1994 he was a lecturer at the Liszt School of Music Weimar , then until 1998 at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts . Since 1998 he has been the main lecturer for jazz piano at the Berlin University of the Arts and at the Cologne University of Music and Dance , and since 2011 at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . Pablo Held is one of his well-known students .

As a pianist, Nuss took part in numerous studio productions (including for WDR , NDR , SDR , SWF , HR , RIAS ) and played a. a. with Mel Lewis , Clark Terry , Shirley Bassey , Benny Bailey , John Taylor , Bobby Shew , Don Menza , Johnny Griffin , Art Farmer , Slide Hampton , Toots Thielemans , Ack van Rooyen , Paul Heller , Jeff Hamilton , John Schröder , Steffen Schorn , John Abercrombie , Till Brönner , Paul Kuhn , Bob Brookmeyer , Thilo Berg , the Bobby Burgess Sound Explosion and in Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass . He became known through his collaboration with saxophonist Peter Less , with whom he has released six CDs so far (2009) and won several awards.

In 1997 Hubert Nuss founded his own trio with John Goldsby (b) and John Riley (dr), with whom he has now released four CDs.

His brother is the trombonist Ludwig Nuss , he is involved in his album Ups and Downs (2003). His nephews Benyamin Nuss as a pianist and Jonathan Nuss as a trombonist also began a remarkable career as a musician.

The Hubert Nuss Trio refers to synesthesia , i.e. the simultaneous perception of tones and colors, as they were familiar to the French composer Olivier Messiaen with his album The Book Of Colors , which they last recorded on May 12, 2012 at the Bonn Jazz Festival in the Bundeskunsthalle presented.

Hubert Nuss lives in Cologne .

Prizes and awards

Nuss received a second prize in the national competition " Jugend musiziert " in the subject of organ improvisation. In 1988 he was awarded the promotion prize of the city of Mannheim for jazz composition, arrangement and interpretation in 1988 together with Peter Less , and in 1991 the worsted jazz prize . For his recordings with his own trio, the readers of Scala magazine voted 1999 “Jazz Newcomer of the Year”. In 2008 he was awarded the " WDR Jazz Prize for Improvisation ".
