Jazz Festival Bonn

The Jazzfest Bonn is a festival that has been held annually in Bonn since 2010 with the aim of promoting contemporary creative jazz . The concert series with a "high-contrast program" is usually held over a period of three weeks in May.

Musical program and venues

Usually in double concerts, both world-class artists and national stars are presented with young musicians and regional jazz greats. The musicians present their own compositions or contemporary interpretations of well-known works. The basic idea of the festival organizers, to rely on a program of contrasts, is received positively in the criticism.

In 2017, 23 concerts took place on twelve evenings over three weeks. Several of these concerts are recorded by Deutschlandfunk and WDR and broadcast later.

With the various venues, the Jazzfest includes centrally located locations in Bonn: These include the Beethoven House , the Bread Factory , the Federal Art Hall , the House of History , the LVR State Museum , the Opera House, Post Tower and Telekom Forum, University of Bonn and the Volksbank House.

The Jazzfest Bonn was founded in 2010 with the aim of presenting the high quality of regional and national jazz musicians to the public alongside international stars. Another goal is to make the festival and Bonn nationally and internationally an important place for jazz and to open up the jazz genre to a larger audience. The artistic director and managing director of the event is the saxophonist Peter Materna . The organizing association has succeeded (also due to the good response from the festival visitors) in gaining main sponsors from business and public institutions as sponsors.

In 2013 all concerts were sold out well in advance. As the reviews in the specialist press (especially in the Jazz Podium and Jazzthetik ) show, the Jazzfest Bonn has established itself as an important festival in recent years, as the organizers have ventured out of the “comfort zone” and also acts beyond Pop jazz and mainstream jazz present what was well received by the audience.
