Peter Materna

Peter Materna (* 1965 ) is a German jazz musician ( alto , tenor and soprano saxophone , composition).

Materna studied classical and jazz saxophone at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and the Folkwang University in Essen until he graduated in 1992. During his studies he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra .

Materna began to work with his own trio in 1988, for which he initially received a composition commission from the International Ludwig van Beethoven Foundation. In 1989 he founded his own quartet, which worked together for 20 years with the same line-up. In 1992 his debut album, "Jazz Contract" was released, followed by eight more. Since 2010 he has also been the artistic director and managing director of the Bonn Jazz Festival ; he also worked with the Kelly Family .
