Paul Heller (* 21st April 1971 in Jülich ) is a German jazz - saxophonist (main instrument tenor saxophone ), composer and arranger .

Live and act

Heller studied from 1990 to 1994 at the Cologne University of Music with Wolfgang Engstfeld . From 1987 to 1988 he played in the NRW Youth Jazz Orchestra and from 1989 to 1991 in the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer .

In 1990 Heller started working as a professional musician and played in the big bands of Thilo Berg , Jeff Cascaro , Ansgar Striepens / Ed Partyka , in the Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion , the Brussels Jazz Orchestra and has been a member of Bob since it was founded in 1994 Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra . He also played with such diverse musical personalities as Steve Swallow , Adam Nussbaum , Al Foster , Johnny Griffin , Roman Schwaller , Dusko Goykovich , Eddie Gomez , Volker Kriegel , Bennie Wallace , Ack van Rooyen , Kenny Werner , John Engels , Walter Norris , Jasper van 't Hof , Charly Antolini , Joanne Brackeen and, with his wife, the Dutch jazz singer Fay Claassen . With Jörg Engels he led the Interception group (with Kris Goessens , Ingmar Heller and John Hollenbeck ). Since 2005 he has been a member of the WDR Big Band Cologne .

On behalf of the Goethe Institute , Heller undertook extensive tours through Turkey, Mexico, Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh.

As a teacher he is invited to many jazz workshops, for example in Inzigkofen, Unna, Koblenz, Jena or Dortmund. From 2000 to 2005 Heller was the main subject lecturer for jazz saxophone at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .

Recordings

Since 1994, Heller has released eight CDs under his own name (including on Mons Records ) with, among others, Ack van Rooyen, Roberto Di Gioia , Franco Ambrosetti , Adam Nussbaum , Wolfgang Haffner , Achim Kaufmann , John Hollenbeck , Al Foster , Simon Nabatov, Michael Abene and his brother Ingmar Heller . As a sideman and co-leader, Paul Heller is represented on over 70 CDs and in countless radio and TV productions.

Honourings and prices

In 1983 Paul Heller won first prize as a drummer at the age of twelve at the state competition " Jugend jazzt ", North Rhine-Westphalia. Two more first prizes followed in 1985, and as a saxophonist in 1986, 1995 and 1998 Paul Heller received first prize at the “Monaco International Composition Competition”. In 1996 he received the support award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for music .
