Ansgar Striepens

Ansgar Striepens (born April 7, 1965 in Werne ) is a German jazz musician ( trombone , arrangements , composition , orchestral direction ).

Live and act

Striepens tried out numerous instruments in his childhood before he decided on the trombone at the age of twelve and received classical lessons. As a teenager he also played drums and bass in rock and funk bands . At the age of 15 he became interested in jazz and took lessons from Stefan Bauer , who introduced him to the Dortmund jazz scene. At the age of 19 Striepens won the state competition Jugend jazzt and joined the JugendJazzOrchester NRW . In 1987 he began his instrumental studies at the Cologne University of Music with Jiggs Whigham . As a student he founded his first jazz band, Ansgar Striepens & Jazz Interrogation , for which he also composed. He then went on to study composition with Jerry van Rooyen . He later took lessons from Billy Dobbins and Bob Brookmeyer . In 1999 he released the album Tunnel Vision - Music for Jazz Orchestra with Ed Partyka . His second CD, Dreams & Realities , followed in 2002 with a quintet , on which John Abercrombie and Lee Konitz also participated as guests .

In 1996, Striepens was appointed professor for jazz trombone at the Liszt School of Music Weimar . In 1999 he also took over the artistic direction of the Saxony-Anhalt Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2004 he resigned from Striepens' professorship in order to be able to devote more time to his instrument and to become more active as a composer and arranger. The first collaboration with the WDR Big Band (and singer Götz Alsmann ), the production Winterwunderwelt with mostly his arrangements, was very successful; The CD, released in 2006, was in the German album charts for four weeks shortly before Christmas of the same year, sold more than 40,000 copies within the first year and received a four-fold jazz award. Productions with musicians such as Klaus Doldinger , Randy Brecker , Benny Golson , Helge Schneider , Culcha Candela , Nicholas Payton , Battista Lena , Stefan Bauer or Theo Bleckmann , but also with the hr big band , Sarah Connor , Nina Hagen and the Bujazzo followed.

He also wrote the score for the award-winning (music) short film “Ukulele Blues” by Gil Mehmert .

In the summer semester of 2009 he was appointed part- time professor for jazz trombone and ensemble management at the Folkwang University of the Arts , where he is also responsible for the Folkwang Jazz Orchestra . In 2013 he was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize for Composition.

As the successor to Jiggs Whigham, Striepens will lead the Federal Jazz Orchestra from 2020 .
