Ed Partyka
Edward A. "Ed" Partyka (born August 23, 1967 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz musician ( bass trombone , tuba , composition ) and arranger .
Live and act
Partyka studied music at Northern Illinois University from 1985 and continued his studies with Jiggs Whigham at Cologne University of Music from 1990 . He deepened his skills as a jazz composer between 1993 and 1995 in a workshop with Bob Brookmeyer .
Partyka was a member of the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra and was part of the Vienna Art Orchestra until 2008 ; he also worked for Carla Bley , Thomas Gansch , Florian Ross , Roman Schwaller , Erika Stucky and Günter Noris . In addition to his own Dectet and the Jazz Big Band Graz , he leads the Regensburg Jazz Orchestra . As a guest conductor and arranger, he has worked with the hr Big Band , the NDR Big Band , the RIAS Big Band Berlin , the Summit Jazz Orchestra , the Zurich Jazz Orchestra , the Rainer Tempel Big Band, the Frank Reinshagen Big Band and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra . He was also for the RTV Big Band , the Oslo Workshop Big Band , the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra , the Sunday Night Orchestra , the Generations Festival Big Band , the Sandvika Storband , the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw , Klüvers Big Band , the Jazz Orchester Vorarlberg , Milan Svobodas Prague Big Band and for the Western Australia Youth Jazz Orchestra .
In 1998 Partyka presented his first album Tunnel Vision: Music for Jazz Orchestra with Ansgar Striepens . On the occasion of Louis Armstrong's 100th birthday , he received a composition commission from ASCAP and a commission from the International Association for Jazz Education .
From 2003 Partyka worked as a lecturer for big band, composition and arrangement as well as jazz harmony at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . Since October 2006 he has been professor for jazz theory, composition and arrangement at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz . In addition, he was visiting professor for jazz composition at the Music Academy in Katowice in 2009/2010 . Since 2010 he has also been a lecturer for big band, composition and arrangement at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences .
Prizes and awards
In 1996 he emerged as a finalist in the hr composers' competition. In 1998 he was the first recipient of the NDR Music Prize, which was advertised for conductors in the field of big band jazz. In the same year he received the " Julius Hemphill Composition Award".
