Flip Philipp (* 1969 in Oberwart as Friedrich Philipp-Pesendorfer) is an Austrian cross-genre percussionist (mainly vibraphone , marimbaphone ) and composer who is active in both classical and jazz .

At the age of five, Philipp received music lessons on the recorder , and soon also on the trumpet and euphonium . But at the age of seven he decided to play drums. At the age of 14 he received percussion lessons at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz . Then he switched to the Franz Schubert Conservatory in Vienna, where he concentrated in particular on mallet instruments . In addition, he studied improvisation at the "Summer College" of the Berklee College of Music in Perugia.

As early as 1987 Philipp started as a substitute and soon also as a member of various Vienna symphony orchestras and chamber music ensembles. As early as 1989 he was engaged by the Wiener Symphoniker as first percussionist, to which he still belongs to this day. He also worked with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra , the Ensemble die reihe , the Klangforum Wien , and the Ensemble XX. Century together. He is also part of Siegfried Kübelböck's Vienna Symphony Jazz Project .

As a composer and arranger, Philipp soon wrote for his own projects. In 1999 he wrote the ballet Caravaggio for the Vienna Volksoper with the DJs Patrick Pulsinger & Erdem Tunakan . He performed his composition “Dissonata Concordata” in 2004 with Ferhan & Ferzan Önder at the Cairo Opera. In 2007 he performed his own “Concerto for Marimba & Strings” in the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. In addition, Philipp worked with the Vienna Jazz Workshop. From 2008 to 2010 he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra .

His own projects include the Hammond Organ Vibes Quartet , a duo with Oliver Kent , the Lana Cenčić & String Septet , an octet or dectet that he directed with Ed Partyka , the Flip Philipp / Klemens Marktl Constellation, and his vibraphone -Solo projects. In 2006 he played the world premiere in Austria for Michael Mantler's Marimbavibe . He has also performed with Kruder & Dorfmeister , Charles Aznavour , Natalie Cole , Joe Zawinul , Alegre Corrêa , Lalo Schifrin , Heiner Goebbels , Diana Ross , Plácido Domingo and John Law .
