The Franz Schubert Conservatory for Music and Performing Arts and Music School is Vienna's oldest private conservatory. It offers study places without age limit in subjects from classical to jazz , drama to musical theater .

history

The conservatory was founded in 1867 by Eduard Horak and was initially named after him. In 1871 the first “state examination course” was established. The founder and first director of the conservatory and his successor founded branch schools in Vienna, Baden and Bad Vöslau . In 1943 the music school and conservatory were separated, with the latter being granted public rights in 1961. In 1979 the Horak Conservatory was renamed the Franz Schubert Conservatory , and Helmut Neumann was appointed Rector in 1980 . In the same year a jazz department was founded and in 2010 a department for ethno-percussion as well as a field of study for photography and graphics were founded. Director Karl Svec acquired the Franz Schubert Conservatory in 1983 and relocated it to Mariahilfer Strasse . Since 2010 it has been located in Neuwaldegg Castle in Hernals before moving to the center of Vienna at Esslinggasse 9 in 2016. Since 2017, the conservatory has been located near the Wien Mitte train station (Landstraße subway station) in Untere Viaduktgasse 16 in the 3rd district.
