Monika Ballwein (born October 14, 1967 in Pyhra , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian singer, vocal coach , songwriter and choir director . She is a five-time participant in the Eurovision Song Contest for Austria, four times on stage as a background singer and most recently as a vocal coach and mentor to the winner of the 2014 Song Contest, Conchita Wurst .

Life

Monika Ballwein grew up in Lower Austria and learned to play the accordion at the age of five. At the age of 14 she performed with the gospel soul band “Cantores Dei” as a vocal soloist, for which she was later responsible for the musical direction and all arrangements . At 17, she had a TV appearance on the ORF talent show Die Große Chance . After graduating from high school in Sankt Pölten, she studied jazz singing , with instrumental and vocal pedagogy at the Franz Schubert Conservatory in Vienna .

Ballwein performed with Rainhard Fendrich , Wolfgang Ambros , Nina Hagen , Christina Stürmer , Udo Jürgens , Count Basic , Chaka Khan , Bill Ramsey , Jennifer Rush , Georg Danzer , Uwe Kröger , Marianne Mendt and the duo Luttenberger * Klug , among others . She has worked on more than 1500 song productions and lends her voice to jingles at more than 20 radio stations in Austria and Germany . She is also active as a soloist in the " Dancing Stars Orchestra" on the TV show of the same name. In October 2013 Monika Ballwein released her first specially composed single Coming home .

Vocal coach

In 2004 Monika Ballwein founded her own singing academy for language, singing and entertainment. In December 2012 she successfully completed a 3-year training course as a CVT vocal coach at the CVI in Copenhagen . She is the first authorized teacher who teaches the basics of CVT in Austria. As a vocal coach, she has worked in TV productions such as Starmania (2004, 2006 and 2008), Heroes of Tomorrow (2011), The Great Chance (2011–2013), Popstars (2007) and 2014 in Herz von Österreich . In 2006 she met Starmania Thomas Neuwirth on the ORF casting show , who appeared as the fictional character Conchita Wurst from 2011. For eight years she accompanied Tom and Conchita as a vocal and mental coach. As a vocal coach, she also worked with bands, soloists and choirs such as SheSays , Herbstrock , High South - newcomer 2013 (USA), 4 Reasons , Safere 6 , Vocal Choice , Querklang , The hitch hikers , Vocalsessions , Die 3 Extremes , The Gang Guys - Rat pack trio together. In 2005 she acted as musical coach for the German-language world premiere of the musical Romeo and Juliet at the Raimundtheater , and in 2006 for the musical “Fame” in St. Pölten and Wr. Neustadt, 2010 for the musical "The Lion King" in Stockerau and 2013 for the Uwe Kröger show - "Absolut Uwe" . In the musical Estelle , Monika Ballwein played the main role "Göttin Media" in the Ronacher 2014.

Eurovision Song Contest

Monika Ballwein took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for Austria five times , four times on stage as a background singer and most recently as a vocal coach and mentor to Conchita Wurst:

Bands

Monika Ballwein is the lead singer and musical director of the "Live Spirits" formation founded in 1997. With this she played several albums since 1998. With “Monika Ballwein and Band” she produced the album Glamourama in 2002 and Soulcircus in 2012 . Ballwein is the lead voice of the choir "Cantores Dei", for which she arranges and which she also directs.
