The great opportunity was a talent - show in the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), which ran between 1980 and 1990 as well as a remake of a competitive nature from 2011 to 2014 in the evening program. Offshoots of the program were Die Große Comedy Chance from 2012 to 2014 and Die Große Chance der Chöre in 2015 and 2016 .
history
1980 to 1990
The big chance was seen as an indirect Austrian successor to the Show Chance , which was produced from 1969 to 1973. The show was about performing in front of a large audience and there was no competition. New talents from Austria were presented in every episode of the program “Die große Chance”. The show was moderated until 1987 by Peter Rapp , who then presented several shows on ORF, in 1988 Thomas Klock took over the moderation , followed by Elisabeth Engstler the following year . Talents brought forward through this show included jazz singer Ines Reiger , entertainer Mat Schuh , cabaret artist and actor Andreas Steppan , Andy Borg , Eva Lind and Alexander Bisenz .
2011 to 2014
From 2011 to 2014 a new edition of the program ran on ORF eins . This was moderated in season 1 by Doris Golpashin and Andi Knoll , as well as Tom Walek . In the summer of 2011, the radio station Ö3 began looking for talent in Austria with ORF television. The pre-castings were directed by Tom Walek and Doris Golpashin. In the live final shows, the artists will be joined by a five-piece band called Heavy Talents under the direction of Wolfgang Lindner jr. accompanied live. In the second season the show was moderated by Andi Knoll and Doris Golpashin, as in the previous year, but Tom Walek was not used as the "backstage moderator". In the third and fourth seasons Alice Tumler took over the female moderation part.
The first evaluation was given by a four-person jury - consisting of presenter Peter Rapp (in the first season circus director Bernhard Paul ), singer Zabine Kapfinger , ballerina Karina Sarkissova and the German rapper Sido , who after an argument with Dominic Heinzl in the following broadcast from 26 October 2012 was replaced once by Rudi Roubinek (in his We are Kaiser role as Obersthofmeister Seyffenstein ). Each juror awards a plus or a minus that lights up in front of him; in the event of a tie, the audience votes by remote control whether they can advance. At the end of a broadcast, the jury awards three tickets in a secret session and the audience votes one ticket for the next stage.
Twelve candidates were nominated for the three semi-final shows by televoting . In the semi-final shows, candidates were also selected by the jury and the audience, from which two final candidates were selected by televoting. For the third final candidate, each jury member nominated one of the remaining candidates. The one of the four selected with the most votes from the televoting reached the final. In the final, the winner was determined by televoting.
Seasons of the new edition (2011-2014)
First season (2011)
The first season of the new edition began on September 9, 2011. The first six episodes were recorded in the Rosenhügel film studios at the beginning of September , the remaining three recall shows and the finale ran live on ORF Eins from the end of October. The candidate Chiara Kerper , who presented her own interpretation of the Shakira song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) in the second episode, attracted more attention . With the title she reached number 19 in the Austrian singles charts. The singer Christine Hödl took first place and received 100,000 euros as the winner.

Controversies over candidates
In the second broadcast of the new edition, the candidate Helmut Link appeared, who wanted to prove his talent on the harmonica. After the broadcast, the ORF received several complaints because the song performed by Link had great similarities with the forbidden Horst Wessel song . The ORF then removed the candidate from the show's homepage and cut his appearance from the night repetition and the stream on ORF TVthek . In episode three, the Krone journalist Michael Jeannée appeared with his candidate, Heurigenwirt Martin Zimmermann, who was supposed to imitate engine noises. When Jeannée wanted to introduce him, there was a battle of words with jury member Sido, who described his appearance as arrogant shit . This also criticized two of his colleagues as fearful of a possible revenge Jeannée in his column. When the jurors voted, there was a stalemate so that the audience could decide whether Zimmermann should advance to the next round. Eventually, the candidate dropped out of the show.

In the first episode, the show achieved an average viewer number of 672,000 and a market share of 28 percent of the total audience, which was far above the ratings of its predecessor on the broadcast slot ( Heroes of Tomorrow ) .
Episode 6 of the first new season ensured the best value on the broadcast slot in the target group of 12 to 29 year olds since 2007.

Second season (2012)
The application period for the second season began right after the finale of the first season of the new edition. The second season has been broadcast since September 7, 2012. Instead of Bernhard Paul, the former presenter of the program Peter Rapp takes a place on the jury. After the first semifinal show, it was announced on October 20, 2012 that the ORF broke up with Sido immediately after the broadcast with Dominic Heinzl because of physical abuse . The fictional character Seyffenstein (alias Rudi Roubinek ) from Wir sind Kaiser replaced Sido in the jury in the broadcast on October 26, 2012. On October 31, 2012, ORF announced that Sido would be back on the jury from the third semi-final show on November 2, 2012. The winners were the dog dance duo Alexandra and Esprit.

Third season (2013)
On April 16, 2013 it was announced on Hitradio Ö3 that ORF would like to produce a third season of the great opportunity. In place of Doris Golpashin, Alice Tumler took over the moderation at the side of Andi Knoll. The nationwide castings started on May 25, 2013 in Vienna and ended on June 8, 2013 in Graz. The live shows were broadcast in October and November 2013. Thomas David won the final on November 8, 2013 . The audience in the final was 782,000 with a market share of 31% during the show and 733,000 (40%) in the following decision show.

Fourth season (2014)
In the fourth season, the jury consists of Oliver Pocher , Larissa Marolt , Petra Frey and Peter Rapp . The broadcast of the five recorded casting shows began on September 12, 2014, and the live broadcasts began on October 17, 2014.
The duo Harfonie (Hanna Maizner and Nora Baumann) from Ranggen in Tyrol won the final on November 7, 2014 . The audience in the final averaged 851,000 people with a market share of 33% during the show and 944,000 (43%) in the following decision show.

First season (2012)
In 2012, a spin-off called The Great Comedy Chance was shown, for which one could apply from September 2012. In contrast to the original concept, this casting show was limited to funny contributions. The show consisted of two editions (a casting show and a final show) and aired on November 16 and 23. The jury consisted of Peter Rapp, Ulrike Beimpold , and Eva Maria Marold . Fourth place at the judges table should occupy originally the rapper Sido, this was, however, by the Ö3 presenter Robert Kratky replaced. Eight out of 37 participants were selected for the final. There was also the side band Heavy Talents under the direction of Wolfgang Lindner jr. used live again. The first place was endowed with prize money of 25,000 euros. The winner was the “Zwa Voitrottln” group.

On January 10th and 17th, 2014, a second season of the competition with Oliver Pocher , Peter Rapp, Eva Maria Marold and Ulrike Beimpold in the jury was broadcast. The Belgian stand-up comedian Olivier Sanrey won.

The great opportunity for choirs (2015-2016)
First season (2015)
In 2015, a spin-off called The Great Chance of Choirs was shown. The show consisted of two casting shows which were broadcast on April 17th and 24th, the semi-finals on May 1st, 2015 and the final on May 8th, 2015. The jury consisted of Oliver Pocher , Larissa Marolt , Ramesh Nair and Birgit Sarata together. The show was moderated by Andi Knoll and Kristina Inhof , the prize money for first place was 25,000 euros. The eight-member Piccanto ensemble from Salzburg came first, the Calypso children's choir from Vorarlberg came in second, and the BORG Gastein pupil choir came third. In the final there was also the choir "Voices of Volunteers", consisting of volunteers from the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 under the direction of Monika Ballwein , Die Echten , the Massive Beats Crew , Chilli da Mur and the HIB.art.chor.
Second season (2016)
A second season was produced in 2016. The shooting for the casting and the first pre-castings were carried out in June 2016. Andi Knoll moderated the show together with Kristina Inhof . The jury of the second season consisted of Ramesh Nair , Oliver Pocher , Dorretta Carter and Fräulein Mai . The broadcast took place from October 14th to November 25th 2016 on ORF. The show consisted of four casting shows which were broadcast from October 14 to November 4, 2016, two semi-final shows on November 11 and 18, 2016 and the final on November 25, 2016. In the first semi-final show, the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen , the group Ladies and Gentleman , the VOK from Leibnitz and the Young Roses from the Rosental made it into the final, and in the second semi-final show the 4 ME , the group from the Gumpoldskirchen music school , the singing group from Pöllau and the Seicento moved into Final one. The winner was the group of singers in Pöllau, the best three also included the VOK and the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen. Seicento and 4ME followed.
