Tom Walek

Tom Walek (born October 21, 1971 in Vienna ) is an Austrian radio and television reporter and presenter .

Life

After graduating from business school, Walek worked for some time as an animator in Greece and Turkey and as a ski instructor in Carinthia. He also worked for a management consultancy until he switched to programming at Hitradio Ö3 .

Tom Walek has been married to triathlete Veronika Hauke-Walek since 2012 . The couple has had a daughter since May 2014 and a son since October 2015.

Career

Micromann

As a micromann in the Ö3 alarm clock , he achieved great fame. The street interviews were introduced in 2000 under moderator Hary Raithofer in the Ö3-Wecker. In the morning posts, Walek asks people on the street trick questions like “At what temperature does water ignite?” Or “What color is the fire service's blue light?”.

In 2010 he generated a lot of media interest when he asked a youth officer of the right-wing populist FPÖ about current politics and exposed her as de facto ignorant.

Walek wanders

Since 2015 he has been doing very personal interviews on Austria's mountains during the holiday season as part of the Ö3 interview program “Walek wandert”.

Hiking partners in summer 2015 were Thomas Muster , Robert Palfrader , Ursula Strauss , Heinz Fischer and Marcel Hirscher , in winter 2016 Tobias Moretti , Marlies Raich , Michael Landau and Herbert Prohaska and in summer 2016 Anna Veith , Gerhard Berger , Kira Grünberg and Andreas Gabalier .

Race to the South Pole

In December 2010 he was in front of the camera in the ORF / ZDF event documentary " Wettlauf zum Südpol ". Together with Hermann Maier and Sabrina Grillitsch and the prematurely retired Alex Serdjukov, he formed the Austrian team that won the race in which they reached the southernmost point on earth ahead of the German team ( Markus Lanz , Joey Kelly , Claudia Beitsch and Dennis Lehnert) .

Since then, Walek has been giving lectures on the expedition to the South Pole.

Newton's sleepless experiment

In July 2010, Walek faced a self-test at the science magazine Newton in which he had to go without sleep for 50 hours.

The big chance

In 2011 he was part of the team of moderators for the new edition of the ORF show “ Die große Chance ”, where he accompanied the Ö3 casting tour and participated in the six casting shows.

Brain with egg

In autumn 2011, Walek and cabaret artist Joachim Brandl received their own knowledge program called “Hirn mit Ei” on the ORF comedy show “ Thursday Night ”, in which four prominent candidates and the audience in the hall were involved in popular science experiments.
