Hitradio Ö3 (also Ö3 ) is the third radio program of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) and its nationwide broadcast pop wave. Georg Spatt is the program director .
General
Hitradio Ö3 is one of the three nationally broadcast radio programs of the ORF and the radio with the largest reach in Austria. In South Tyrol , Ö3 is broadcast by the Südtirol broadcaster in the DAB + standard .
Under the motto “Life is a Hit”, pop and rock hits from the 1980s, 1990s and today find their place in the radio station's playlist. The radio is assigned to the Hot AC radio format .
history
The radio station Ö3 was founded in 1967 when the new broadcasting law in Austria came into force. This was enforced in 1964 by the Austrian population with a referendum against proportional funk. ORF general director Gerd Bacher brought Ernst Grissemann to Vienna and entrusted him with setting up the entertainment radio in the reformed ORF. Frank Elstner acted as advisor .
Originally, Hermann Egger, the head of the entertainment department at the ORF regional studio in Tyrol, was Ö3 boss; but after a few weeks he returned to his old position. The first broadcast of Ö3 went on October 1st, 1967 over the airwaves. The team from the very beginning included Dieter Dorner , Walter Richard Langer (Vokal Instrumental International), Reinhard Mildner , Alfred Komarek (exclusive melody, lyrics with Ernst Grissemann), André Heller (Die Musicbox), Rudi Klausnitzer (Ö3-Wecker). With the “ Schnulzenerlass ” by Gerd Bacher in 1968, the quota of German-language music was reduced to Ö3 in favor of music of Anglo-Saxon origin.
In 1977, Ö3 started its 24-hour "round-the-clock" program. In 1984, due to technical developments, all 250,000 music tracks were stored digitally.
Ö3 formats that were exclusively dedicated to Austrian pop music ( Austropop ) were the "Rot-Weiß-Rote Radio" from 1982 to 1985 and the Austroparade from 1985 to 1990. The "Rot-Weiß-Rote Radio" was founded in 1992 reintroduced.
In preparation for the liberalization of the broadcasting market of 1998 Ö3 was in a pure in 1996 Format Radio converted, while the "Red-White-Red Radio" was not authorized more, in addition, other cultural programs and alternative programs were largely on Ö1 or FM4 issued .
The radio quota propagated by the public ORF radio stations in December 2009 on the basis of self-regulation to play a 30 percent share of Austrian music has not yet been implemented by Ö3 or the other stations (as of June 2016).

Ö3 campaigns
Ö3 lucky bag
The Ö3 surprise bag is a mobile phone collection campaign by the radio station that was launched during the 2004 Christmas season. The “Ö3 lucky bags” will be sent to Austrian households by Post AG at the beginning of December . The Austrian population is called upon to collect old cell phones and return them postage paid. For each functioning cell phone, three euros and 50 cents for each broken cell phone are donated to the Austrian aid organizations Caritas and Licht ins Dunkel . This u. a. supports Austrian families. The Ö3 surprise bag is a project by Hitradio Ö3 in cooperation with Österreichische Post AG, Caritas and Licht ins Dunkel.
Team Austria
In August 2007 Hitradio Ö3 called for the “ Team Austria ” campaign. Together with the Austrian Red Cross , volunteers who are willing to help in the event of a natural disaster were / are being sought. With this campaign, Ö3 channels, structures and organizes the helpfulness of the Austrian population. The helpers register on an online database and complete an introductory course on disaster relief at the Austrian Red Cross. In the event of an emergency, they should provide support to the professional rescue workers. The members of Team Austria are informed about an operation by SMS. No one is obliged to provide assistance by registering. The Austria team now has 25,000 members. Other European countries have also convinced themselves of the idea. Team Austria's idea and concept were exported to other European countries as part of the Team Civil Protection project, which was co-financed by the EU . The latest promotion is the “Team Austria Tafel”. In cooperation with the Red Cross, surplus food donated by retailers is distributed to needy Austrians. At the 50 “Team Austria Food Banks” across the country, over 10 tons of food have already been given to people in need.
Ö3ver

The Ö3 sound check
Between 2005 and 2010, Ö3 organized the Ö3 sound check . It was a band competition in which Austrian bands competed against each other. An expert jury selected the participating bands. These were then presented in the radio station's program and thus had the opportunity to present themselves to the audience. After that, the audience chose the winning band on the station's website. 1,586 bands took part in the five editions of the Ö3 Soundcheck.
The winners of the five Ö3 sound checks: 2005 - Shiver 2006 - SheSays 2007 - PBH Club 2008 - Cardiac Move 2010 - Norbert Schneider
The New Austrians
" The New Austrians " was an Ö3 project to promote Austrian musicians. Since 2007, Ö3 has made part of the airtime available for Austrian music under the motto “New Pop and Rock from Austria”. Furthermore, the young artists were hired by the radio as live acts for the Ö3 events. This gave local musicians the opportunity to convince the Austrian audience of themselves. Many of the “New Austrians” found their way onto the radio through their participation in the Ö3 sound check, while others were “discovered” by the radio station.
The New Austrians include Anna F. , Luttenberger-Klug , Mondscheiner , Valerie , Excuse Me Moses and Herbstrock .
The Ö3 Christmas miracle
From December 19 to 24, 2014, Ö3 hosted the Ö3 Christmas Miracle for the first time . Gabi Hiller , Andi Knoll and Robert Kratky moderated for a good cause for 120 hours non-stop from the Ö3-Wunschhütte , a glass broadcasting container on Salzburg's Kapitelplatz . With a donation for the light in the dark emergency aid fund , which helps families in need, you could have a music wish fulfilled. A total of 617,582 euros were donated in these five days. The three moderators only got to drink, several times they were also allowed to have a soup. Various prominent live guests came to the glass studio, such as Thomas Morgenstern , David Alaba , Thorsteinn Einarsson , the Poxrucker Sisters , Marcel Hirscher etc.
From 19 to 24 December 2015, the new edition of the Ö3 Christmas miracle took place, this time at Graz's Mariahilferplatz , right in front of the Mariahilferkirche . 72 hours - without compromise
For three days the motto for 5,000 young people across Austria was “Get down to business and do good”: Austria's largest youth social campaign started for the sixth time. Within 72 hours, groups of five to 20 young people between 14 and 25 years of age solved a charitable task that was only mentioned at the start of the project. After the starting shot, it was time to roll up your sleeves, be creative, improvise and power up to the last second. Hitradio Ö3 reported live for 72 hours on the tasks and locations. Ö3 moderator Peter L. Eppinger traveled all over Austria and reported from various projects. And in updates from various locations, the young people also had their say and presented their progress.
Range
Ö3 is the radio station with the greatest reach in Austria. The radio test for the first half of 2010 confirms this market leadership. Every third radio minute heard is accounted for by the Ö3 program. Almost 2.8 million Austrians listen to the station every day. According to the radio test, that's a million more listeners than all Austrian private radio stations put together. The dominance of the radio station is greatest among 14 to 49 year olds with a market share of 43%. Ö3 achieved the lowest market share with 30% in the federal state of Vienna.
The competition from private radio began in 1998 with the introduction of a dual media system in the radio sector. However, Ö3 was able to record its highest market share in 2001, when the first private radio stations had already been on the air for three years. At that time, Ö3 achieved an average daily rate of 42.6% throughout Austria.
Trivia
