Hour clock (radio program)

Simplified example of an hour clock

In radio programs, an hour clock , transmitter clock , program clock or hot clock is a representation that reproduces the basic structure of the program hour , usually in the form of a round diagram. It specifies exactly how the program is structured from various components such as word, advertising and music sections. The hour clock is divided at least every minute, in cases with a particularly precise structure, such as the program of local radio programs, also every second.

At first, hour clocks were mainly used by private broadcasters , while public operators hesitated to introduce them.

purpose

The hour clock is of central importance in the organization of radio programs and for product design and thus also for marketing . It serves to rationalize the editorial work and to ensure the quality of the radio program. It helps to create a recognizable format for a program and is intended to provide guidance to the listeners. In order to keep the hour clock, it is important to have learned back-timing in radio .

Creation

Various software packages and online services such as Broadcast Clock Creator and UClock.it are available for the quick creation of radio clocks .

example

In the case of information broadcasters in particular, the program parts are repeated hour by hour. For example, the hour clock of B5 aktuell looks like this in 2017:

  • xx.00: Info block
  • xx.08: B5 Bavaria
  • xx.13: B5 exchange
  • xx.14: Traffic situation and weather
  • xx.15: messages
  • xx.20: B5 background
  • xx.25: B5 culture
  • xx.28: Traffic situation and weather
  • xx.30: Info block
  • xx.38: B5 Economy
  • xx.43: B5 exchange
  • xx.44: Traffic situation and weather
  • xx.45: messages
  • xx.50: B5 background
  • xx.55: B5 Sport
  • xx.58: Traffic situation and weather

The "xx" stands for the hour, e.g. B. Traffic and weather at 16:44, 17:44, 18:44 etc.
