Mitterbach am Erlaufsee is a municipality with 481 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Lilienfeld district in Lower Austria .

geography

Mitterbach am Erlaufsee is located in the southern Mostviertel in Lower Austria. Mitterbach itself borders directly on Styria ; Mariazell is only about seven kilometers further south . In the municipality are the Ötschergräben , the Erlaufsee , the Erlaufstausee and the Gemeindealpe (with ski area).

The area of ​​the municipality covers 67.32 square kilometers. 78.86% of the area is forested.

The municipality includes the following two localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Josefsrotte (136) including Eben, Erlaufklause, Friedenstein, Josefsberg and reservoir settlement
  • Mitterbach-Seerotte (345) including Erlaufboden, Erlaufsee, Hagen, Hinterötscher, Hochmitterbach, Mitterbach, Seerotte and Unter der Alm

The community consists of the cadastral communities Josefsrotte and Mitterbachseerotte.

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

Due to the immigration of Protestant lumberjacks in the 18th century, there is a strong Protestant community in Mitterbach with the well-preserved Mitterbach tolerance prayer house .
