The Erlaufsee (formerly also Erlafsee) is a mountain lake at the foot of the Gemeindealpe not far from the village of Mitterbach am Erlaufsee . The border between Lower Austria and Styria runs through the lake . It is located on the Zellerrain road from Mariazell to Lunz am See . In the summer months you can reach the lake from Mariazell with the museum tramway Mariazell – Erlaufsee , which is operated with historical steam tram sets. He has a natural beach on the south bank (gravel). The Erlauf flows through the lake . The lake's abundance of fish includes perch , pike , char , rudd , brown trout and rainbow trout .
On the shore there is a restaurant, a snack station , a campsite, a boat rental and a diving school . Round trips with excursion boats are also offered on the lake. The Erlaufsee is not to be confused with the Erlaufstausee, located about 4.5 km away, downstream of the Erlauf .
Diving in the lake
The Erlaufsee is a popular body of water for divers , as it offers clear views and a charming landscape. After Neufelder See, the lake is particularly interesting for divers from the greater Vienna area , as it can be reached from there within about one to two hours. The diving zone only extends over a smaller part of the western shore and is marked by two boards. The flooded trees and the numerous fish, z. B. big pike. The vegetation is sparse and the lake floor is mostly muddy and loamy. Diving in the Erlaufsee is already mountain lake diving , so the no-stop time must be corrected and the ascent speed adjusted. Permits for night and ice diving must be obtained from the owner of the lake, Österreichische Bundesforste AG . Underwater means of transport such as aqua scooters are prohibited.
Traffic development
Since the 1990s, the Erlaufsee has been connected to the Mariazell train station by the Mariazell – Erlaufsee museum tramway . Work is currently (2013) on extending this museum railway to the center of Mariazell. The operator of the museum railway is currently also preparing a nostalgic shipping operation on Erlaufsee, which was put into operation at the end of June.
The Erlaufsee in the mirror of art
In September 1817 Franz Schubert set the poem Erlafsee ( D 586, op. 8, no. 3) by his friend Johann Baptist Mayrhofer to music .
It was the first song that Schubert gave to print. The lines reproduced here show the poem in its original form with 36 lines, original spelling, punctuation and indentation. Schubert only used 14 lines of this for his setting.
- I feel so good, so hurt
- At the quiet Erlafsee.
- Holy silence
- In spruce branches.
- Motionless
- The dark lap;
- Only the shadows of the clouds flee
- Over the smooth mirror.
- Fairy picture, what do you want me
- Are you floating around me here too?
- Get out of the land of shepherds.
- Myrtles do not grow here;
- Reed grass only and fir weight
- Wreath this silent bay.
- Fresh winds
- Ripple linden
- The waters;
- And the sun
- Güldne Krone
- Flickers paler.
- Fresh winds
- Oh, don't give up, you sweet picture!
- The waves will soon be satisfied,
- And a smooth sea, and the air is lukewarm,
- Cheer up, you wonder woman.
- The edge of the lake
- A ribbon wraps around
- Wrapped in light green;
- It's the river
- Who has to drive
- The sawmills below.
- The edge of the lake
- He writhes unwillingly on the jetty
- Away from his beautiful mother
- And flows to distant reasons.
- Will, love! also with a gentle hand,
- The singer's serious rock country,
- Wrap in Blüthenroth?
