former open-cast lignite mine, numerous diving platforms in the lake |
The Neufelder See is a much-visited swimming lake and a diving opportunity in the greater Vienna area . It is located approx. 50 km south of the Austrian capital on the border between Lower Austria and Burgenland .
The lake did not arise naturally. In the years 1807 to 1932 was in the area Zillingdorf-Neufeld-Zillingtal lignite in opencast mined. After the cessation of coal mining, the groundwater was no longer pumped out. Within a year, the lake emerged from the flooded " residual hole ".
The community of Neufeld an der Leitha operates a lido, but the lake is owned by the Esterházy family . Furthermore, about two thirds of it is in the market town of Hornstein and about one third in Neufeld an der Leitha .
The body of water is fed exclusively by groundwater sources (and precipitation) and has a natural runoff, which automatically cleans and renews itself (the lake changes its volume 1.5 times a year). At its deepest point, the Neufelder See is about 24 meters deep. In summer the lake reaches a water temperature of 24 to 25 °.
Tourism and economy
Living by the lake
There are private properties around the lake, and the public lido is on the south bank. The oldest and largest mobile home site in Burgenland is located on the east bank, it offers 855 parking spaces, and there is also a day camp site on 5000 m² with 33 parking spaces.
Sports
Diving
In the immediate vicinity of Vienna , the Neufelder See is the only generally divedable body of water. Numerous diving schools therefore hold their open water lessons at this lake. In addition, the lake is visited by many recreational divers, especially on nice weekends.
There are two diving centers , one in the public lido in the east of the lake, the other opposite in the west of the lake on the premises of the Friends of Nature . The visibility under water varies from four to ten meters to almost zero, depending on the weather, the number of visitors and the number of careless divers who have ground contact. Even on hot summer days, visibility can be good to very good 20 m from the shore.
Orientation ropes are laid under water across the lake, and there are also several platforms between 5 and 20 m deep for carrying out exercises.
Triathlon
Since 1988, the Neufelder Triathlon, one of the oldest Austrian triathlon sports events, has been held here in June .
traffic
The entrance to the lido is about 700 meters from Neufeld an der Leitha train station ( ROEE ). The railway (direct connection to Vienna) and the regional bus lines of the Wiener Neustädter Stadtwerke are accessible by public transport, the closest bus station to the public lake entrance is called "Strandbad".
The lake can also be easily reached by car via the A3 (Hornstein exit).
