biography

After primary school, Kusstatscher attended the middle and high school of the Johanneum in Tirolo in his home village . He then studied philosophy, theology and education at the Philosophical-Theological University of Brixen , the University of Innsbruck and the University of Klagenfurt . He completed his studies in 1974 with a diploma thesis on the history of the parish of Villanders, submitted in Innsbruck . Professionally, Kusstatscher worked as a teacher as well as in the field of adult education and professional development. He was director of the vocational schools in Brixen for 17 years .

After a time as chairman of the South Tyrolean student body , Kusstatscher was mayor of Villanders for the South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP) from 1974 to 1985 . From 1988 to 1993, Kusstatscher was a member of the South Tyrolean state parliament and therefore also a member of the Trentino-South Tyrol regional council . He also acted as chairman of the SVP's employee wing. In 1999, Kusstatscher resigned from the SVP. In 2003 he was able to win another state parliament mandate on the list of the South Tyrolean Greens . In 2004, Kusstatscher successfully ran for the Federazione dei Verdi for the European Parliament . Riccardo Dello Sbarba was his successor in the state parliament .

In the European Parliament, Kusstatscher was a full member of the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs and an alternate member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. His main concerns were: creating a greener and more sustainable transport policy, environmental and species protection that can stop the loss of plant and animal species and secure the survival of the human species, and an unconditional basic income . In the spring of 2009, Kusstatscher was repeatedly mentioned in national media such as the Corriere della Sera and Il Sole 24 Ore , as he was again the hardest-working EU parliamentarian in Italy, both in terms of presence (97.2%), and in terms of the number of questions and Requests. In the European elections of the same year, he missed a re-election.

He was a member of the citizens 'committee for the European citizens' initiative for the introduction of an unconditional basic income (UBI) at European level. At least the member states should be asked to research ways in which an unconditional basic income can be developed as an instrument for a more stable social system. Together with the contact person for the European Commission , the Austrian Klaus Sambor , as well as Ronald Blaschke from the German Basic Income Network and other initiators from 15 countries, he organized the collection of signatures.

From 2009 to 2012 he chaired the South Tyrolean Greens together with Brigitte Foppa . In 2019 he was awarded honorary citizenship of his home community Villandro.
