The Museumstramway Mariazell – Erlaufsee is a tram built as a museum railway from Mariazell station of the Mariazellerbahn to Erlaufsee in Styria .

history

This standard-gauge railway line has several special features: It is the only standard-gauge railway line in Austria that only connects to a narrow-gauge line, but is not connected to the standard-gauge network. This museum railway was not created like most of the others by reactivating a disused railway line, but by completely rebuilding it in the 1980s.

The entire operation is carried out by volunteer members in their spare time. As including not only full-time railway workers, they are enrolled in operation, and then, depending on the use of intra-operatively ( train drivers , train attendants , shifter ) or officially ( drivers , heater tested). In conjunction with regular training courses and exercises, professionally trained staff is available in the driving service. Only two employees are available to handle construction sites or renovation projects, who handle these projects in addition to the managing director. The vehicle collection includes the only operational steam tram locomotive for the Vienna tram , which is also the oldest operational steam tram locomotive in the world.

The museum tramway Mariazell – Erlaufsee is known for its historical rail vehicles from several Austrian tram and local railway companies, which have been restored to a high technical level. Since after years in the scrap yard or after use for a different purpose, there is often only little usable original material available, the extensive re-production of large components is unavoidable.

From summer 2007, work was intensified on extending the railway from the train station to the center of Mariazell. In summer 2008, standard-gauge tracks were laid on the former route of the Mariazellerbahn to Gußwerk , and the dam through the Türkengraben was partially filled. The Promenadenweg - Grazer Bundesstraße stop was opened in August 2015. The operators are aiming for a further extension towards the city center, specifically to the existing bus station. Another project is the continuous electrification of the museum tramway. The new route from the train station in the direction of the city center as well as an approximately 300-meter-long section of the route in the direction of Erlaufsee and the operating facilities (workshops, remise) are already spanned with contact wire for test drives with electric traction vehicles .

MT railway supplies

The MT-railway needs trade, transport and mbH plans, directs and controls the restoration work own and other vehicles in its partner workshops. Historical vehicles of the Salzburg railway and tramway company , the Wiener Lokalbahnen , the St. Pölten tram, the Vienna tram and the Gmunden tram serve as references .

Completely new buildings were also designed as commissioned work and manufactured in Mariazell. For a tourist train in the Al Hoota Cave in Oman , an accumulator- operated multiple unit with a gauge of 760 mm was designed and built. The company also planned the railway itself. A construction site vehicle was also converted for a tram construction site in Vienna on behalf of the Porr construction company .
