The Erlaufstausee is a reservoir with a storage target of 779.4 m above sea level. A. , which is located at the transition from the Ybbstaler to the Türnitz Alps in the Lower Austrian municipality of Mitterbach am Erlaufsee . It has a storage volume of 1.4 hm³ and is fed by the Erlauf . On the north and east side of the reservoir, the narrow-gauge Mariazellerbahn runs along Mariazeller Strasse for a short distance . The lake is 2800 m long and an average of 50 m wide, its deepest point is around 26 m.
The artificial Erlaufstausee was dammed for the first time between 1908 and 1911 with the construction of a 37 m high gravity dam with a 212 m long, curved crown. The Erlaufklause dam was, according to today's criteria , the first large dam in Austria. The Erlaufstausee serves as weekly storage for the storage power plants Wienerbruck (7.8 MW) and Erlaufboden (3.4 MW) of evn naturkraft . These were built to supply the Mariazell Railway, which was electrified in 1911.
The Erlaufstausee is located in the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park . It is accessible to tourists through hiking trails close to the banks. There is a snack station and the “Erlaufklause” train stop nearby .
