Gußwerk is a former municipality with 1227 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2014) in the judicial district of Bruck an der Mur and in the political district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in Styria .
On January 1st, 2015 it was incorporated into the municipality of Mariazell together with the former municipalities of Halltal and Sankt Sebastian as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform.
geography
Gußwerk was with 285.29 square kilometers of Soelden (Oetztal) in Tyrol and Vienna , the area the third largest municipality in Austria . Gußwerk is located in the Salzatal in the Austrian state of Styria . The three highest mountains in the former municipality are the Ringkamp ( 2153 m ), the Hohe Veitsch ( 1981 m ) and the Hochstadl ( 1919 m ).

history
In the place, which was probably built in 1342, the then ultra-modern iron casting plant with three blast furnaces was built from 1743 to 1767 . The mining of the Mariazell area and the supply of resources (water power) made it possible to found an iron casting plant. This existed from 1742 to 1899 and was one of the most important artillery producers of the Austrian monarchy.
Abbot Eugen Inzaghi from St. Lambrecht Abbey founded the plant in 1742 with Maria Theresa's approval. The owner of the plant changed, the first owner was the St. Lambrecht Abbey from 1742 until it was dissolved in the course of the Josephine church policy in 1786, then - as before in the mercantilist sense - an interim management of state officials until the final takeover as an Aryan work in 1800.
The first phase from 1742 to approx. 1750 was characterized by the construction of the plant and the associated organizational and financial problems. After the first heyday of art casting under P. Wolfgang Hofmann, the development into an artillery goods producer began in 1769 (contracts with the Artillery Main Office). Ignaz von Reichenberg expanded the plant as a tenant (1771/1775 - 1787), expanded the facilities and moved a lot of staff to Gußwerk. The favorable development was hampered by disasters (floods, fire).
The period of the interim administration from 1788 to 1800 was shaped by the management of Andreas Haager, who, supported by the circumstances of the time (coalition wars, increased need for weapons in the monarchy), succeeded in making the plant an essential producer of cannons, bullets, Making bombs and ammunition for the Austrian army. This development was the decisive factor in the decision to continue the plant under state management. During the coalition wars, it became the monarchy's most important producer of artillery products. Iron cast products and artillery, such as B. cannons of the foundry, which also gave the place Gusswerk its name, can still be found today not only in Austria, but also in z. B. Croatia at the fortress of Pula or in Šibenik .
The cannon boring mill was built in 1829 (in today's borehole district). In 1899 the last blast furnace in Gußwerk was blown out.
During the Second World War , an American North American P-51 escort fighter was shot down on July 26, 1944 via Gußwerk . The pilot was able to get out of the plane and save himself with the parachute.
In 1996, the discovery of an arms depot in Höll (village of Weichselboden) set up by the USA after the Second World War caused a stir.

The coat of arms indicates the cast iron works, which was very important until the last century and which gave the place its name, and the timber industry that was important in the community.
The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from September 1, 1964.
