Gollrad is a village in the municipality of Mariazell .

Iron ore was probably mined in Gollrad by the Celts . Mining in the area around Mariazell is documented as early as 1025. In 1342 Duke Albrecht II and in 1459 Emperor Friedrich III. the St. Lambrecht Abbey and Mariazell Abbey , which had already received the rights to ore mining in Gollrad, the concession to operate four smelting furnaces, which, according to a deed of purchase from 1462, were located in Gollrad . The pig iron melted here was mostly processed in the hammer mills in the area. It was not until 1896 that mining and casting came to a standstill in Gollrad.

Parallel to the original village of Gollrad, which is located on Mariazeller Straße , a miners' settlement called Knappengraben developed in the valley . This is also the reason for the location of the Gollrad branch church , which is located a little outside the town center.
