The Niederalpl (pass height 1221 m above sea level ) is a road pass crossing and place in the Mürzsteg Alps in Styria .

Location and landscape

The state road 113 Niederalplstraße connects Mürzsteg via the Dobrein (municipality of Neuberg an der Mürz) with the village of Wegscheid via Aschbach (both municipality of Mariazell ), and thus Mürzstal and Salzatal and Mariazell. Until 2012, the top of the pass was the border between the districts of Mürzzuschlag and Bruck an der Mur. The pass connects the Veitschalpe in the south with the Tonionalpe in the north.

Niederalpl is locality of the municipality Neuberg in Bruck-Mürzzuschlag District and the district of Aschbach in the town of Mariazell in the same region. The Neuberger part is located as Rotte at 921 m above sea level. A. on the east ramp of the pass, including the houses on the pass summit and the Wetterinalm , to the west are a few scattered houses on the old pass road (Alte Niederalplstraße) and in the Dürrwaldgraben 961 m above sea level. A. There are three restaurants at the top of the pass; two of them are open all year round.

history

In the past centuries ore was mined in the area of the pass crossing; an old tunnel bears witness to this time.

tourism

In winter, a chair lift and three drag lifts as well as a baby lift are available at around twelve kilometers of slopes. The Niederalpl ski area has existed since 1971 and has snow-making systems and a snow-making pond.

The Niederalpl is the starting point for hikes to the Hohe Veitsch (via Sohlenalm) and the Tonion (via Wetterl and Herrenboden) and, above all, an important station on the north-south long-distance hiking trail 05 between Mariazell and Hochschwab . In summer, pilgrimage routes lead directly over the top of the pass and ski slopes. On the Almboden, at 1339 meters above sea level, there is a dairyman's hut open in summer and a ski hut open in winter.

The area east of the pass summit (Neuberg an der Mürz municipality) is part of the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park .
