The Wagrainer Höhe is an approximately 8 kilometer long pass crossing that connects St. Johann im Pongau via Wagrain with Flachau , and thus the Salzach Valley with the Ennstal .

geography

The top of the pass ( 961  m above sea level ) is directly at Schwaighof in the Wagrain municipality. In the valley furrow, the top of the pass is hardly visible, the landscape of the lower Wagrainerbach valley between Wagrain and St. Johann is more distinctive. The top of the pass represents a valley watershed ; The Schwaighofbach goes directly to the west to Wagrainer Ache (Kleinarlbach) , which then flows into the Salzach in St. Johann. To the east, near Moardörfl , the Litzlingbach runs towards the Enns near Reitdorf . Thus the pass separates the catchment areas of the two Danube tributaries Inn and Enns and the two main hydrographic areas of Austria Danube to Jochenstein and Danube below Jochenstein .

Orographically, the pass forms the border between the Central Alps to the south and the slate Alps ( Grauwackenzone ) to the north, connecting the Mosermandl group of the Radstädter Tauern ( Niedere Tauern ) with the Hochgründeck -Stock of the Fritztaler Mountains ( Salzburg Slate Alps ). The valley furrow Untere Wagrainer Ache – Litzlingbach represents part of the large alpine longitudinal valley furrow Salzach-Enns, which goes back to the SEMP line (Salzach – Ennstal – Mariazell – Puchberg) .

History and traffic

The pass connects the Salzachpongau with the Ennspongau via the town of Wagrain (the municipality of Wagrain is usually included in the Ennspongau, although the main town is on the other side of the pass). The B163 Wagrainer Straße Altenmarkt - St. Johann leads over the pass  , whereby the eastern valley town of Feuersang is where the Flachau junction of the A8  Tauern motorway is located. The road has an average gradient of 3.5%.

In terms of traffic, the pass is only of local importance, as the Eben bei Altenmarkt valley watershed , which leads from the Altenmarkt basin into the Fritztal , is the much more mobile route (A8, Tauernbahn ; via Bischofshofen ). This route through the partly narrow Fritztal was only made accessible (again) in the course of the 17th and 18th centuries in a condition suitable for long-distance traffic, so there were earlier assumptions that the Roman road Virunum - Iuvavum ( Zollfeld in Carinthia - Salzburg ) would have guided via Wagrain. As far as we know today, this is considered obsolete, the course through the Fritztal appears largely secure. At least one Roman side road via Wagrain is likely. In the Middle Ages, the Wagrainer Höhe was the more important connection to the Salzburg areas around Radstadt and - via the Radstädter Tauern (Obertauern) - the Lungau , unless you were aiming for Salzburg directly via the Lammertal .

Today, the pass primarily represents the connection from Wagrain and the Kleinarltal to the Ennspongau, or at best its more direct route to the district capital and a kilometer-wise shorter alternative route from the Styrian-Salzburg Ennstal to the Oberpinzgau . From Flachau , the eastern ascent of the Litzlingbachtal is also the access to the valley station of the Wagrainer Höhenbahn in Moardörfl, the longest gondola cable car in the Salzburger Sportwelt Ski Amadé with a length of around 3.5 km and a height difference of 892 m .

Individual evidence

  1. a b The allocation of the Slate Alps to the Central Alps or the Northern Alps is assessed differently.
  2. Kote of the Austrian map , there but without lettering; See also height information on the Wagrainer Höhe photo , on passknacker.com
  3. Respectively to both, the Kleinarltal is considered to be Salzach Pongau.

  5. Both of these routes also have a critical bottleneck, the Lueg pass on the Salzach, or the Lammeröfen .
  6. The Pongau junction (Bischofshofen bypass) ends 3 km before St. Johann, so the journey time on the motorway is much shorter.
