Ennspongau is a term from spatial planning and names the eastern part of the Pongau on the upper reaches of the Enns in the east of the state of Salzburg . It includes the communities around the central region of Radstadt-Altenmarkt. Like the southern Lungau, the Ennspongau does not drain to the Salzach , Salzburg's main river.

Location, landscape and places

The Ennspongau extends from Wagrainer Höhe about 20 km eastwards to the state border with Styria at the Mandling Pass , where the Enns continues into Upper Styria ( Styrian Ennstal ). The central area is the Altenmarkt-Radstädter basin , a wide valley of the Enns. The south of the Ennspongau with Flachauer Tal (Ennsquelltal), Zauchental (Zauchbachtal), Taurachtal and Forstau as well as their side valleys belong to the Radstädter Tauern (Niedere Tauern), the north with Hochgründeck and Roßbrand to the Fritztaler Mountains ( Salzburg Slate Alps ).

With the rest of the Pongau (the political district of St. Johann ), which is then appropriately called Salzachpongau , the Ennspongau is connected to the rather insignificant Wagrainer Höhe only through the Fritztal towards Bischofshofen (the Fritztal is often included in the Ennspongau) with the Lungau over the Radstädter Tauern Pass . This line is also followed by the main Ennspongau train, with the Tauern Autobahn  (A 10), which, however , passes under the main Alpine ridge with the Tauern tunnel, with the Ennstal Straße  (B 320) in the direction of Upper Styria, and the Ennstalbahn Bischofshofen - Selzthal.

View from the Dachstein ( Hunerkogel ) to the southwest over the Ennspongau: Filzmoos , Roßbrand with transmitter, on the left Ennstal with Radstadt and Altenmarkter basin, in the middle of the Hochgründeck , far away the Hohe Tauern with the Großglockner in the middle

The Ennspongau is a center of tourism of European standing, here are the prominent sports locations Flachau and Flachauwinkl , Eben and Altenmarkt - Zauchensee , the capital of the Ennspongau is the city of Radstadt .

These communities are together with Sankt Johann im Pongau , Wagrain / Kleinarltal , Großarltal and Gasteinertal (in the Salzachtal), with Filzmoos (Salzburg) , the Hochkönig region (Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach am Hochkönig) and the Schladming – Dachstein region (Styria) the members of the Ski amadé , one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. Tourism in the Ennspongau and the western Salzach Valley locations is combined under the umbrella brand Salzburger Sportwelt .

Enns-Pongau planning region

In a broader sense, one speaks in the Salzburg spatial planning of a planning region Enns-Pongau (Spatial Planning Act 1998 / ROG, State Development Program 2003 / LEP), and thus includes all municipalities that are economically oriented towards the central Radstadt / Altenmarkt area, that is:

Altenmarkt , Eben , Filzmoos , Flachau , Forstau , Hüttau , Kleinarl , Radstadt , St. Martin am Tennengebirge , Untertauern , Wagrain

With the establishment of the Pongau regional association - as required by the ROG / LEP - it was decided to create a joint regional association for the whole of Pongau in order to do justice to the interwoven interests of the communities. The Enns-Pongau region serves in this context as a “regional cooperation area” or “sub-region”.

Individual evidence

  1. the Tauernbahn continues to the west, near Gastein, not along the Tauern Autobahn - there are two Tauern passes, the one near Obertauern and the Hohe Tauern near Gastein; there is no rail connection Ennspongau - Lungau.
