Schladming – Dachstein is a holiday region in the upper Ennstal in the Liezen district in Styria .

geography

The region encompasses the upper end of the east-west running Styrian Ennstal and its side valleys - below the Salzburg Ennspongau bordering on the Mandlingpass and to the south adjoining the Salzkammergut . To the south, the valleys of the Great and Small Sölk ( Sölktäler Nature Park ), Untertal ( Talbachklamm , Riesach Falls ) and Obertal , and Preuneggtal extend into the Schladminger Tauern of the Niedere Tauern. A northern side valley of the Enns is the Ramsau . The northern edge is formed by the Dachstein massif of the Kalkhochalpen, UNESCO World Heritage . With 300 mountain lakes, 1000 springs and 100 waterfalls, the region is one of the most water-rich regions in Austria.

The region can be reached via the Ennstal Straße B 320, the connection from Tauern Autobahn A 10 (Ennstal junction near Altenmarkt im Pongau ) to Pyhrn Autobahn A 9 (Selztal junction), and the corresponding railway line, the Ennstalbahn from Salzburg via Bischofshofen - Liezen to Graz.

History and communities of the region

Mountaineering and skiing have a long tradition in the entire Schladming-Dachstein region. Tourists discovered the scenic mountain farming region for themselves early on. This was simplified by the construction of a railway line through the Ennstal and its opening in 1875.

The Hohe Dachstein , the highest peak in Styria , was first climbed in 1834. Other mountains in the region are the Grimming , which for a long time was considered the highest mountain in Styria due to its massive shape rising from the Ennstal valley floor, or the Hochgolling , the highest mountain in the Niedere Tauern.

The tourist boom began for the region with the popularization of skiing. In 1908 the Krummholzhütte was built on Hauser Kaibling and ski tourists could be accommodated in the Plannerhütte for the first time on the Planneralm . In Schladming one ski association was founded in 1908 already and opened in 1920 with the high Wurzhütte the first ski hut. The first ski lifts were built in Schladming and on the Planneralm in 1953 and 1954.

Schladming developed into the ski metropolis of the entire region. The first ski world cup race in the region was held on the Planai in 1973 . In 1982 the touristic development culminated for the time being with the hosting of the Alpine Ski World Championships . In 2013 Schladming was again the venue for a skiing world championship . This took place from 4th to 17th February 2013. In 1993, Schladming was the first venue for the Special Olympics World Games outside the USA.

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, tourism associations and tourism associations were founded in many places in the region due to the beginning of tourism. These associations were closely linked to the individual locations, there were hardly any cross-location activities. Since the 1980s and 1990s, the cooperation between the individual tourism associations has been strengthened and tourism associations were founded to look after several places and pool resources and skills. The Dachstein-Tauern region was founded as the umbrella organization of the tourism associations. This should coordinate the cooperation of the individual tourism associations and use optimization potential.

In autumn 2007, the transformation of the Dachstein – Tauern region into the Schladming – Dachstein tourist region finally began .

The Schladming-Dachstein holiday region is now divided into the following seven single or multi-municipality tourism associations (according to the Styrian Tourism Act 1992 ):

All of these tourism associations, as well as the Bergbahnen Hauser Kaibling , Riesneralm , Planneralm , Planai - Hochwurzen and Reiteralm are shareholders of Tourismusmarketing  GmbH Schladming-Dachstein .
