Eastern Styria (planning region)

The Eastern Styria is a planning region according to the Styrian State Development Program in 2009 and covers the political districts :
The two districts are to the east of the central Mur towards the Burgenland border in the area of the historical East Central Styria , from which the name East Styria is derived. Statistically, the planning region falls into the NUTS region Oststeiermark AT225, which also includes the planning region Southeast Styria .
The landscape includes:
- the north-eastern part of the eastern Styrian hill country ( Riedelland ), characteristically divided to the south-east by the river areas Raab with Pinka , Feistritz , and Lafnitz with Safen , on the border with Burgenland. The border to the south is unspecifically the watershed of the south-east Styrian streams to the Mur.
- the south-east roofing of the north wing of the Eastern Alps , i.e. parts of the peripheral mountains east of the Mur , in particular the eastern Grazer Bergland and the southern Joglland with the Kulm massif , as well as the southern flank of the Fischbacher Alps .

The region has cadastral area , of which around 1,215 km² are permanent settlement , and 18,126 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).
2,326 km² of53% of the total area is permanent settlement area (after southeast Styria the second highest value of all Styrian regions), the population density is 77 inhabitants / km² above the Styrian average (74, Austria 100). The population density in the permanent settlement area is 146 inhabitants / km² (Styria 233, Austria 259).
Regional centers are the cities of Weiz ( 11,797 inhabitants), Hartberg ( 6,795 inhabitants), Fürstenfeld ( 8,639 inhabitants) and Gleisdorf (10,926 inhabitants). Birkfeld ( 4,958 inhabitants, all as of January 1, 2020) is classified as a regional secondary center.
The sub-regional supply centers are Anger , Bad Waltersdorf , Friedberg , Grafendorf bei Hartberg , Ilz , Kaindorf , Markt Hartmannsdorf , Neudau , Passail , Pinggau , Pischelsdorf am Kulm , Pöllau , Ratten , Rohrbach an der Lafnitz , Sankt Margarethen an der Raab , Sankt Ruprecht the Raab , Sinabelkirchen , Stubenberg , Vorau and Wenigzell importance.
