The goals

The Kaindorf Ecoregion is represented in the non-profit association Kaindorf Ökoregion, founded in April 2007 . It is a non-profit organization that has set itself the goal of drastically reducing CO 2 emissions , switching to alternative energies and raising awareness among the population. The aim is to achieve CO 2 neutrality in the six municipalities by 2020.

The ecoregion was brought into being by committed citizens of the communities. It is supported as a model region within the framework of the Local Agenda 21 initiative (regional planning of Agenda 21 , the UN's climate protection program) by the Styrian regional government . With the implementation of the Local Agenda 21 at the club level, the organization has played a pioneering role in Austria and was also honored as part of the Climate: aktiv campaign by the Ministry of Life .

The association serves as a network for all activities and coordinates the cooperation between the municipalities, the business community, the working groups and the population. The association's board consists of representatives from all six municipalities, the six mayors, all group leaders, as well as representatives of the economy and the population sit on the extended board.

Since July 6th, 2009 it has also been constituted as a community association , as a small region within the meaning of the Regionext program for the structural reform of Styria 2010–2015 .

Agendas

The subject areas are divided into 8 working groups made up of experts and active citizens of the Kaindorf region. With the cooperation of the population, the measures to achieve CO 2 neutrality can thus be adapted to the wishes of the residents.

  • Saving energy : Conscious saving measures, technical aids and energy-saving devices should reduce the energy requirement and the savings achieved should be made clear through regular checks.
  • Mobility: The construction of charging stations , innovative traffic concepts , the expansion of footpaths and cycle paths as well as the production of fuel from vegetable oil are important points of this working group in order to reduce CO 2 emissions. The association also bought electric scooters , which were then passed on to the locals at a reduced price and rented out.
  • Heating and electricity : The construction of ecological small power plants (e.g. solar power plants) and the conversion to alternative energies are the primary goals of this group. A complete supply of green electricity is the plan.
  • Housing and renovation: advice on building insulation and the like
  • Tourism: Promotion of gentle, sustainable eco-tourism in the region through pleasure cycle paths
  • Agriculture: Promoting the build-up of humus . Lectures, consultations and accompanying studies should show the benefits of humus enrichment
  • Buying behavior and awareness-raising: Consumer advice , lectures, workshops and projects in the economy strengthen awareness of ecological and sustainable action and create cohesion in the region.
  • Wind and water: Expand the use of wind energy and improve the water supply and disposal and take precautions to reduce CO 2 .

With the Institute for Sustainable Techniques and Systems of Joanneum Research , a scientifically based CO 2 balance model for the ecoregion was created as a pilot project in the form of a database. There is also cooperation in particular with the University of Graz (projects in the field of environmental systems science ) and the Kapfenberg University of Applied Sciences.
