The JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH is the second largest non-university research institution in Austria. In addition to the headquarters in Graz, there are also other locations in Weiz , Niklasdorf , Klagenfurt , Vienna and Pinkafeld . JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH is owned by the State of Styria (80.75%), BABEG Kärntner Betriebsansiedlungs- & Beteiligungsgesellschaft (14.25%) and the Burgenland state holding company (5%).
history
In the 1950s and early 1960s, the state of Styria founded four associations with the Association for the Promotion of Electron Microscopy , the Computer Center , the Reactor Institute and the Institute for Low Temperature Research in order to supply the Graz universities with infrastructure that could not be covered by the university budget.
These four associations were combined in 1968 under one umbrella association, the Graz Research Center . In 1986 the research company Joanneum was founded as a GmbH , the associations were gradually dissolved. The company has had its current name since 1988.

Since July 1, 2016, the research work has been divided into seven research units. These units each comprise three to six research groups.

Naming, motto
The name JOANNEUM RESEARCH is derived from Archduke Johann (1782–1859), who was interested in the natural sciences throughout his life. The company's motto is "The Innovation Company" .
