history

Konrad von Safen's manor, from which the surrounding communities settled, was located in Hofkirchen. The Church of St. Stephen also belonged to him. After the Lords of Safen died out in the 12th century, ownership passed to the Stubenberger , Neuberger and Stadecker families . The Stubenbergers received today's municipal area, which was documented in 1396 by naming the Dreihöf, Moihöf and Hofkirchen estates. In 1459 Hofkirchen was sold to the Neubergers, in 1504 to the Pöllau manors . In 1850 Hofkirchen finally became an independent municipality. The community has been part of the Kaindorf ecoregion since 2007 .

In the choir area and the side altars there are wall paintings from the mid-16th century. The current church pavement dates from the 18th century. The sacristy was built at the end of the 18th century. There are two bells in the tower: one from the 16th century, the other from 1925, as its predecessor was melted down during World War I.

The entrance to the women's cave is next to the church . Only a short part of the entrance has survived. The cave served as a hiding place for women and children during the Turkish wars .
