The Almenland was founded in 1995 by originally twelve municipalities as a region of the LEADER initiative with the aim of jointly implementing projects to strengthen the economy, tourism and agriculture in the region. A Leader Local Action Group (LAG) was set up to lead the coordination and implementation of the projects. In the first funding period of the EU project LEADER II, 40 projects were implemented, including a. Almenland farmer specialties and alpine farmers. In the next LEADER + funding period (2001–2006), the Almo lead project was initiated, the targeted breeding of cattle for meat production. These were also declared a pleasure region in 2006 and are now a protected trademark (Almenland Almochse) .

In October 2005, nine of the municipalities established an AGENDA 21 small region to implement the UN sustainability initiative Local Agenda 21 . This has been implemented so far (as of 2014) in eight communities (Koglhof, Gasen, Tyrnau, Tulwitz, Hohenau, Fladnitz, Naintsch / Heilbrunn, St. Kathrein / Offenegg).

The municipality of Pernegg joined the region in 2006.

On August 12, 2006, the Almenland nature park , to which all 13 member communities (as of 2014) of the LEADER region belong, was raised by the Styrian state government to a nature park in accordance with Section 8 of the Styrian Nature Conservation Act.

On October 19, 2007, a small region of the Almenland Nature Park was established as part of the Styrian Regionext program for administrative structural reform. The association was finally constituted on June 6, 2011.

Two municipalities (Breitenau, Pernegg, both districts of Bruck) joined Bruck, two (Haslau, Koglhof) Birkfeld and one (Naintsch) Anger. That is why Neudorf, which is not part of the tourism association, came to the small region. This community is also involved in the neighboring region of Schöcklland .

In 2014 the region merged with the LEADER region Energieregion Weiz-Gleisdorf to form A&EG.

As part of the Styrian municipal structural reform , the number of member municipalities changed to six municipalities and three districts from 2015, these are:

  • Communities
    • Fladnitz at the Teichalm
    • Passail
    • St. Kathrein am Offenegg
    • Breitenau am Hochlantsch
    • Gases
    • Pernegg on the Mur
  • Districts
    • Heilbrunn fire holes
    • Koglhof
    • Haslau near Birkfeld

Agriculture

Agriculture also works closely together within the region. A special beef program was launched, which is sold through specialist companies under the Almochsenfleisch or ALMO brand . Suppliers under the brand are around 320 farmers. One of the largest buyers is the Schirnhofer company in Kaindorf near Hartberg.
