geography

The Almenland Nature Park is located in the north-western part of the Grazer Bergland in Styria around the Teichalm and Sommeralm. The region lies at an altitude of 464 to 1720  m above sea level . The nature park extends over an area of 253 km². The following nature park communities belong to the nature park: Fladnitz / Teichalm , St. Kathrein / Offenegg , Passail , Breitenau / Hochlantsch , Gasen , Pernegg an der Mur .

Landscape and protected area

In addition to the extensive subalpine Almland, the nature park is characterized by grassland-shaped cultural landscape with rock faces and gorges, as well as extensive forest landscapes. The rocks in the region are very different, both limestone (Hochlantschkalk) and slate (Naintsch, Gasen, Haslau) occur in the region. The nature park is freely accessible, several roads lead up to the alpine pasture area. Flora Fauna

The extraordinary flora includes the raised bog biotope with sundew, numerous orchids and the silicate flora on the Kirchkogel. In the Almenland Nature Park there are numerous rare animals, including the alpine buck , black stork , kingfisher , capercaillie and ibex.

Attractions

In the nature park there are natural beauties , natural monuments or places of power that have often developed through centuries of interaction between nature and man, for example gorges, caves, ponds, moors, waterfalls and sources of origin. These locations are easily accessible and freely accessible.

Natural sights

The Almenland is a cultural landscape . As the present-day area can be experienced, it was redesigned by man for the pasture landscape. The area was deforested with great effort. Residual areas with trees are now in the steeper areas that are not suitable for alpine farming and as solitary trees (here mainly deciduous trees such as maple) with which the cattle could be supplied with leaves for a short time when winter sets in (today in decline because in an emergency Hay and silage is transported up with the tractor). Due to the extensive cultivation, the resulting alpine pasture harbors the basis for alpine lime-loving meadow flora. Grazing specifically encourages plants that cattle do not like, such as the Germer . Such a selection does not take place in meadows that are being mowed.

Special sights are the Bärenschützklamm , Raabklamm , Weizklamm , Teichalm Latschenhochmoor, Hohenauer Ochsenhalt, high plateau Nechnitz and the Drachenhöhle .

Cultural sights

Alpine ox made of wood at the Teichalmsee

In addition to the natural sights, buildings and works of art also determine the cultural life of the region.

Directly on the Teichalmsee is the 6 m high and 10 m long Almi , a wood ox that was built entirely from wood and 22,400 wooden shingles. He points to the use of the Almenland as a pasture area for the Almo, the alpine ox, whose tender meat is valued beyond the region. The approximately 1.5-kilometer-long wooden sculpture trail including the educational trail from Nechnitz to the Gschaidberg offers several animal carvings .

Other attractions include beekeeping Kreiner, Ökopark Hochreiter, Rauchstub'n house, Ark Park Obi Hansl, Almenland studs cheese, dairy Leitner, distillery Graf, Moarhofhechtl, Essigmanufaktur Schaffer / Oswald, Karina Wollwelt, Sulamithgarten, Stoanihaus music, rock church Schüsserlbrunn , Hochlantsch with Via ferrata, motor skills park & Koglhof summer toboggan run or the Rote Wand .
